LS1's are highly overrated, they have shitty rod bolts and they "God-like" cylinder heads are only held down with 4 bolts compared to 11-13 on the Modular. I guess maybe it's because Chevy is SO damn smart.
4.6, 5.0; doesn't matter to me.

4 bolts for the cylinder heads? Are you fuggin kidding me? wow...the what the hell motor was I working on last month? thats 4bolts around each cylinder port there chief. THEY HAVE THE SAME AMOUNT OF HEAD BOLTS/STUDS AS A 5.0. Do your homework before you get on here spout of some BS Misinformation next time. The only motor i have ever worked on that had only 4 head studs...was a SINGLE CYLINDER ******* DIRTBIKE. Get Real...
LS-x all day. f**k the haters.
as everyone stated the rod bolts and pushrods are weak points from the factory. Also the stock valve springs cant be reused if you run a decent cam but all of that is easy to change. Another weak point for many of the aluminum ls motors is that the cylinder walls are usually pretty thin so they cant be bored out much. Also as stated before they have a 4 bolt head pattern which means that when alot of nitrous is used sometimes the heads will push off the block. Also sometimes people get spun bearings, not sure how though. Overall they are very reliable..a buddy of mine has almost 200k on his motor and it still runs like new. I also had 130k on mine before i accidentally blew it up a long time ago, it was my fault because i kept missing gears and overrevving it. They also weren't forged from the factory but then again not many motors are and you can buy forged ls1's for close to nothing nowadays, i picked mine up for 2k which really isn't much at all.
Well, the rod bolts, as previously mentioned, have their limitations. The fact that there are only 4 bolts surrounding each cylinder for head mounting. Beyond that, there might be something less important, but I don't know what it would be. IMO, the design team did a really good job on the engine. Of course, like anything else, there's always room for improvement. Hot rodders and racing are notorious for finding any weak points.
I'll add that the stock pushrods on LS cars tend to be a bit too easy to bend from a slight over-rev. However, that's really not a bad thing as they act sort of like a "fuse" that may save you from piston-valve contact.
Plus, they're easy to change out.![]()

Paul said:LSx. Every time. No question. More power. More cubic inches. Smaller. Lighter. Better BSFC.
