Anyone else notice that the 96 GT's onwards seem quicker than the 94/95 GT's? The throttle response is so much better on the 4.6's and the factory exhaust sounds better, I think they were supposed to be the same HP from factory though? Any reason why the 4.6's feel quicker than the 5.0's?

Be prepared to get harassed, big time. The 5.0L is actually seen of the faster of the 2 engines, by mostly everyone. When the 4.6L came out, everyone was ANGRY, and a few members here still get in the "pushrod is the only way" rule. But I have driven both, I find the 5.0L to have a better exhaust and feels faster...

Empirically, the 96-98 2v was the slowest mustang, and most underpowered built since the early 80s.

The second this thread turns into pushrod vs modular, I'll lock it and delete it.

Besides, everyone knows pushrods are better. Duh.

I have had a '93 LX and my current '98 GT. Both 5 Spd's. My '66 Coupe auto was way quicker than either!

Haha, sorry guys I didn't start the thread to cause any kind of argument, I like both 5.0's and 4.6's, it's just that i've owned a few of both and the 96 onwards just seem to be a bit more lively, i'm not saying there's a vast difference but on the 95 you could barely get a wheelspin out of it where as the 96/97's i've had feel like a much quicker car, regarding the exhaust note, I had a 94 GT with stock exhausts and it sounded not much better than a V6(I put some Flowmasters on though) where as the 96 has a nice growl to it, i've had US spec and Japanese spec so maybe the Japanese spec are limited on their performance which i've heard rumours of in the past? I've never found any info to back this up though

While we're on the subject, do the 99-04 GT's feel quicker than the 94-98 GT's? I've never owned a 94-04

They dont feel quicker they are quicker. The first few years of the 4.6 were pathetic

My uncle owned a 95 with some bolt ons and i own a 96 with some basic bolt ons, i find their both close but the 5.0 just had alittle more get up and go and alot louder then mine with a similar exhaust setup.

i've raced a basicly stock new edge 5speed against my basicly stock 5.0 5 speed. i had a leed until about 115mph then we started to even out.
5.0 had catted Hpipe and flowmaster catback 2.73's
4.6 had underdrive pullys and a k&n with 3.08's

altho i was very impressed to hear a 4th gear bark when he shifted.

The problem is that since the 5.0 has a shorter stroke, it feels like it gets up and go from the "get go." But the 4.6L has more of a topend thing going because the powerband is slightly longer than the 5.0 I believe. To correct this problem on the 4.6L just get a slightly taller gear to make up for that lack of torque feeling down low.

very well said they are similar the 5.0 just has more torque power down low very "torquey"

The 4.6 is lackluster down low but has more top end both close, I just prefer my dinasour pushrod over 1,Ive driven both the 5.0 feels faster but there close.

This is the truth, really doesn't matter which is quicker cause they're both pretty slow.

I've always liked the exhaust note of the 5.0 better than the 4.6, but that's just my own personal view. I also like the basic simplicity of the pushrod engines vs. the modular for ease of repair/rebuild if needed. As far as power goes, I've driven both a '95 GT and a '98 GT, and they really do feel very similar. The '95 did "feel" lighter in the front end during turns, most likely because the engine actually does weigh a bit less from what I understand. Aside from that, they're both too close for me to say one is better than the other.

I like the sound of the 5.0 better myself, it is an iconic note.

My 4.6 does sound pretty badass in its own way though.

Right right. Although I think my 5.0 sounds more like a 4.6. *shrugs*
