I read on a forum where a guy was trouble shooting problems on his car and someone asked if he was sure that when someone adjusted his timing if they disconnected the spout connector. I think that's the term for it not quite sure of the term off hand. But my question is what problems would this cause if you didn't disconnect it and how would you know if it wasn't done properly.

Your timing would be way f'd up.

The spout disables computer control of the timing when removed, so you're setting the timing without the computer. If the computer is controlling it it is usually about 20 deg BTDC but constantly changing. You must disable computer control to time a vehicle, just like on a carbs setup you must remove the vac advance line.

Connect a timing light, disconnect the spout, start engine, loosen distributor hold-down bolt, check the timing, adjust as needed, tighten distributor bolt, replace spout. Done.

it could make your headers glow because you shooting the combustion out the exhuast too early.

My stock headers at idle glowed in the dark and my timing was fine. That was one of the motivations to get a set of ceramic coated BBK'. I've never checked to see if they still do though.
