Any suggestions on actually pulling the motor? My thoughts were to unhook all connections, and set wiring aside. Then unhook driveshaft and pull the motor with trans, and headers still attached? What you fellas think? As well since i busted my timing cover will the explorer cover work or will I need to spring for a replacement? Basically all that needs to be swapped would be oil-pan, pump, and pickup, and if Im correct timing cover. However all other pieces will virtually bolt right up? Just wanting to be sure ahead of time.

I've always found it easier to pull the motor without the trans. That way it just comes straight up, and out.

However, I always install the motor with the trans, so maybe I'm just retarded.

Paul.

Thank you for that Paul. I will give that a shot. Can I keep the headers on it to pull it you think? I assuejm they will need to coem off in order to actually remove the tranny. As long as I can install the car with the headers on the motor Ill be happy seeing as how the driver side is no fun to install with the motor in the car. I have a hoist at the house as well as a few stands so it wont be too terrible. Just want it to go as smooth as possible of course.

Believe it or not, I'm the same way lol. If you sit up on the cowl of the car and use your feet to push/guide the trans down, it works so much easier.

My father is gonna help so that eases things some. I figure I'll lay on my back and guide it in.(giggity) HAHA Sorry. Got it torn down to just heads, block, and headers. All wiring is moved, power steering pump is dropped out of way and ac is also moved to other side of bay, without kinked lines(proud of myself). I figure since we're going to be getting a good bit of snow soon, I will spend some time cleaning up the wiring so and whatnot. So far it looks like I only bent one valve judging by spring height with the rockers off. If its not nasty tomorrow Ill go ahead and try and grab a motor I suppose Ill have some more pics up soon. As soon as it comes out Im tearing it down so we can see the destruction.

Ok so I went to look at an explorer motor this morning. Pulled the pan and main caps and bearings were trash. So the fella tells me he has a shortblock from a 91 that he pulled because the lifters were gone. Checked it out, all bearings are in great shape(had around 120k) on it. Got it for a good price, plus if all is true it will have forged pistons in it. Ha. Hopefully things are looking up.

Ok, got a little more work done today. Its been snowing here which is something we arent used too. Got the heads off to start looking at valves. Only one valve was bent, thank goodness. However it seems that one spot on the other head is kinda off. I had an issue when I installed the heads. The guy who sold me the cam said i would be fine installing it 4 degrees advanced. Well this lead to me bending a few valves due to pvc issues. Not much of an issue you'll see by the pics. Pics of new shortblock are also included. Its a '91 shortblock, all bearings look good, piston bores are in good shape, and they do have the forged pistons.

Yepp thats a cracked piston.

Not an optical illusion. Ha

Here you can see the small spot that was previously messed up(The right one). Seems to cover the sparkplug up some. I suppose its ok?

TRW forged slugs. Pretty happy about that

And of course gotta thank the GF for keeping me company. She's being alot more supportive than I would have thought.

i had an 88 that did the same thing but i was in it pretty hard when it let go so my damage was a little more sever and the crank was hangin out a bit more haha.its because the old balancer you had was shit.if you drive long enough on a shit balancer then toss on a new one,see ya later.thats EXACTLY what happen to me.my balancer was shot then one day on the highway it got real bad,got off the highway, towed the car home.put a new one on at my house, took it around the block,ok then took it again but layed into it,midway thru second gear it exploded.snapped the crank and bent the shit out of a few rods, never pulled the heads bc they were stock.

Please tell me that those spark plugs are just loosely installed in the heads?? If not you were running the wrong plug. The standard 5.0/302 plug are to short for the trickflow heads.. You need autolite 3924s or similar. If they are just loosely installed ignore everything I just said...lol

They are fully installed, and they are motorcraft 42 plugs. I could've sworn that I had the autolites in there. Thats really weird actually. Reckon Ill grab a set when I go to take the dampener back. Hmm how much further will those sit into the cylinder? As well should I go ahead and just get an oem replacement dampener for now, then once I get some change back in pocket would it hurt to get a better dampener that doesn't rely on elastomer to dampen?

The electrode should be sticking out into the combustion chamber. An oem damper would be just fine for now.

Thank you for that my modular brother. Ill order a set when I order my bolts for timing cover and intake. I'm excited to see how much better it'll run.

lol wtf. Hmmm I suppose if I weld it the chances of it breaking are alot less. However that value is equal to the chance of it running

ok so i will most likely be making my order from summit for everything i need. hopefully itll all be back together next week so i can drive it and get is broken in for spring time. A rering kit should put that shortblock into working order and an intake valve will get the heads ready so all should be good i do believe.
