I took this pic awhile back before I installed the oil drive shaft. Both shafts are the same length, the stock drive shaft is on the right and the melling the one I'm using is on the left. If you look at the collar on the melling it sits higher and is different on the stock one. On the stock shaft, I measured the distance inside the cup where the oil pump shaft sits and I trimmed the same amount off the distributor shaft and I put the distributor in and now it sits flush with no gap.

I know all of these tiny details bites! I got number 1 cylinder on TDC and I believe I got the rotor position lined up correctly?

That doesn't look right to me. I would think that rotor position is about 15* advanced. It's been a while since I've looked at mine but I thought the rotor should be pointing between 12 and 1 o'clock.

Put the cap on, mark the dist where the #1 wire goes, I agree that you might be 1 tooth advanced.

Yup, I do have a timing light..I just got some little stuff left to do like connect vacuum lines, electrical connectors and hoses. What should the timing be set at? I'm running a Vortech S-trim (low boost 4-6psi) with Edlebrock heads, Crane 2031, 1.7 Cobra rockers and Cobra intake.

Can you remove the oil pump driveshaft? Then try and stab the distributor in?

Distributor should go all the way in regardless of being a tooth off. You may have something in the oil pump driveshaft hole, or maybe in the distributor. Or the shaft could have a defect that prevents it from going in on one side.

I would definitely figure it out before running it.

The oil pump drive shaft is already in the motor. I think it would be a pain removing it. I did check the hole in the drive shaft and there is no crud in there.

Yes, I trimmed off the distributor shaft and it now sits flush with no gap. And installed the distributor with number 1 cylinder on TDC and got the rotor lined up with the number 1 plug
