Don't Do what I Did.

The pinion seal on my rear started leaking, so I replaced it being very careful not to change the preload on the bearings. About 2-3 weeks later the rear started making noise steadily getting worse. I figured I screwed up and crushed the crush ring and changed the preload. So I parked the car for the winter.

Saturday I dropped the car off to have the rear done, I did not want to screw it. They finally got it in yesturday to tear it apart. They called me and told me everything was junk, axles, gears, bearings, everything. Then he told me that there was no oil in it. I was like WTF. I told him what I had done and I had just filled it. Then he told me that when I jacked up the car I bent the rear cover and all the gear oil leaked out.

So be careful when jacking these things up from the pumpkin.

I had 3:73 gears reinstalled, and they used Superior axles. I had never heard of them, but the shop I used has a excellent reputation so I trust them to use quality parts. Now it is nice and quiet and ready to roll for the summer.

I've got superior axles. Pretty nice stuff. Pretty much on par with Yukon. Sucks matt. The worst part is, you probably installed the seal and preload correctly LOL just didn't notice the other mishap.

I'm actually guilty of jacking up my car by the pumpkin and after this story not anymore. My car is stock so where do you guys suggest I jack it up from in the rear?

Jacking a car up by the pumpkin is really common around here. A lesson learned unfortunately the expensive way.

Tough break dude. Yeah i sometimes jack up the rear by the pumpkin but i don't see how you could bend the cover doing it, rough. Didn't you notice all the diff fluid all over afterwords?

The diff cover has a 1/4"-1/2" lip at the bottom, and 3 qts of diff fluid would really make a mess, especially if you park it.

I never noticed a leak. Like was said, it does not hold much and I did not drive my car very much last year. I did the repair at my dads house when I went down one Sunday to work on my '66. It is a 80 mile drive. for all I know it could have all leaked out on the trip home. AWhen I brought my car down to the shop for the repair job there was a very small wet spot.

I am like Steven, I have always had a 8" or a 9" rear so it was never something I worried about before.

I had a jack slip while lifting my old 00 GT and nicked the diff cover, pissed me off but gave me an excuse to put on a diff cover which I wanted to do anyway

In my repair manual, the pumpkin is listed as a lift point. I have jacked mine up by the pumpkin many times. The seat of my trolley jack fits the axle housing w/o touching the cover. No damage, no leaks. Just be cautious with it.

Damn bro, that sucks. Been there with the rearend issues.

I had a pinion leak a couple seasons ago and ended up with this after a loud banging noise started coming from the rearend on the way to the track.

i did something similar not too long ago but i noticed that my diff cover was leaking. When i noticed that i just took a ball point hammer and tapped the cover back to a good seal. I havent had any problems with it since. Sorry for the loss. At least you got some 3.73's out of it and a freshly rebuilt rear end.

I had the exact same thing happen to me. I had a tire mounted at a shop once when I got a flat, and they jacked the car up by the pumpkin to remove the wheel. They kinked the bottom of the cover and it started to leak. The car sat all winter, with me starting it up every month, but not moving it. Well I came home for spring break (this was several years ago now, lol) and was excited to take it for a spin one nice day. I get about a mile down the road and the rear started making horrible noises, it sounded and felt like I was driving down a train track. Turns out, it had almost all drained out over the winter. I found a nice size oil spot where the car had been sitting when I finally got home.

I pulled the entire rear end out and took it to a friend so I didn't have to tow the car to him from my house. He disassembled it and it had ruined everything but the axles, including the differential case itself. All the bearings had seized and one was spinning in the race, damaging it beyond repair. Ended up costing me about $800+ in the end before it was all said and done. Needless to day I always check under the car now for drips just in case! lol

Sorry to hear about your problems. i hate it when even the simplest of things cause the worst problems...
bright side: ford 9" with locker running 4.50 gears and direct N2O for cooling.
bad news: car will be down for some time. >.<

any plans on buying an aftermarket diffy cover? i got the FRPP and it leaks out of the drain hole, but a little RTV fixed that problem.
