FIXED!! NOW RUNNING =] Update with video! First post!

Edit: Saw I was missing a bolt on the tfi module because it broke in the hole. Well after buying a new coil...and tfi....I decided I'd check all connections before I moved onto the stator or dizzy. Took out the tfi and heat sink, drilled out the stuck bolt, retapped it then went and got a new screw from the home depoh. Put it all back in, and it fired up perfectly! Who woulda thought my only problem would be the ground? Well I let it warm up, filled it up with coolant, temp is now staying right at the N in normal. Here's some videos if it idling =]

Are you setting the timing with the SPOUT out?
Are you using a timing light?
Are you using a Haynes/Chilton manual?
TFI's don't usually go out on our cars like they do on foxes (your friends experience probably). I have 185,000+ miles on my stock TFI.

No, no, and no. I was just trying to get it running and was about to fine tune it when it finally stalled out on me. I took my tfi up to autozone for them to check it. (left it inside all day and infront of the vent on the way over there). They tested it 6 times. All of them failed the threshold. I suppose the next step is to buy a tfi and see if it makes a difference. If not return it and back to the drawing board

alot of places will not let you return electronic parts

You have to pull the spout to set base timing. If you don't the computer will continue to compensate for your adjustments

definitely need to pull the spout to set base timing. depending on how much moisture that TFI has seen it very well could be dead, we do live in michigan lol

Sounds like you need to get a new TFI and set the timing with the spout out using a timing light.

before you spend money on anything buy a timing light. back firing is cause by timing plain and simple #1

the only other way you can get a pop is if you have enough raw fuel go into the exhaust then ignite.

I have a timing light, I just have to get my car to start to use it. It's not back firing anymore.

base timing is 10*BTDC
I'm running 12*, some guys get away with 14*.
If you stabbed the dizzy @TDC (0*), might be why it would start and back fired too..
or you have the plug wires mixed up. It happens.

I had a similar problem back in December.... Mine wound up being a bad coil AND distributor.... The coil was loose in it's bracket and the dizzy RATTLED when I turned it after taking it out.... Drove me nut's trying to figure it out... Good Luck

Update as of yesterday: Bout a new coil, made it run a lot better, but it was still losing spark at random. So in the moment and a test at autozone I got a new tfi yesterday.

After a bunch of starting and immediately dying, finally got it to idle on its own enough to set the timing. Pulled the spout, got the timing light out and did it the right way. I need to check today again because it was hard to see last night but I believe the timing is now set at 10* (base timing). Well after plugging the maf back in I gave it a few small revs and it sounded great. Rev'd it up to around 3k and let it fall down by itself and it fell down and stalled out on me.

After that I couldn't get it to start for the life of me. I was getting fuel (I could smell it) but I'm pretty sure I wasn't getting spark. I'm starting to think it could be the distributor. But i'm also missing a screw on the TFI. Could the TFI not be tight enough to the heat sink? I'm going to mess with it some more today so any help is greatly appreciated!
