Gas Tank Spewing Gas

So I always clock my MPG's after I fill up gas and reset the trip meter, it's a habit. Well I noticed a significant decline in gas mileage and knew the engine was fine, so I checked the gas tank. Sure enough it's leaking/spewing if I gun it when it's full from the filler neck entrance to the gas tank. I had a mechanic look at it and he agreed it was the filler neck seal.

While I obviously need to replace this, what else can be done? I've heard of older vehicles ("antique" vehicles and such) getting their gas tanks cleaned. Do I need to clean mine while I have it taken off? Should the fuel pump/filter be replaced? My gas gauge has never worked properly, so I guess I can replace the sending unit while I'm at it? What would the labor hours look like on a job like this? I'm not too mechanically blessed, so I'm iffy about doing it myself, unless you all think it's an easy task?

I guess I could repaint the tank while it's off, too.

What do you all think?

Yes,Repaint it,change the fuel pump,fuel filter,sending unit.

Its is really easy nothing hard, well if the tank has more than a quarter of fuel in it then yeah it can be heavy.just use two floorjacks with some wood and take it down slowly, make sure you wear protective euqipment.

Here is the part you need for the filler neck (Grommet) http://www.latemodelrestoration.com/iwwida.pvx?;item?item_no=LRS-9072B++++++1&comp=LRS

Good luck.

Exactly what Javi said

I just finished mine a few weeks ago. I dropped mine replaced the pump. Of course it went out on me at work so i had to get my roomate to bring my tools up so i could do it in the parking lot. That was a pain and it had over half a tank. One thing your going to want to make sure you do is just use a small dab of oil on the grommet when your sliding the filler neck back in. It helps out a ton. Easiest way to do it is siphon all the gas out you can then drop it. If you don't have access to a lift trust me this will be the easiest. Ask any more questions every one on this Board will help you out.

I concur.

Can someone recommend a fuel pump / sending unit that doesn't whine like a beeyatch?

Those damn filler neck seals should be on recall. Every guy I know with a stang has replaced them.

Thanks for everyone's input! The mechanic could not get to it until next week or the week after, so I tried to do it myself...and 45 minutes later I was successful! I feel great having done it myself. I'm not much of a mechanic as I've said. I didn't get to the fuel pump or sending unit because finances wouldn't allow it, but I still got the main problem fixed! Thanks again everyone!

Our cars are all, at a minimum, ten years old. That seems to be a pretty decent service life for a rubber seal.

My Jeep is ten yrs old and doesn't leak. My Ram was 20 yrs old and didn't leak. I blame this one on bad engineering.

Well for what it's worth, my '95 still has the original seal and doesn't leak a drop.

Well my 95 leaked like a sive LOL. My 96 doesn't leak but I only have 57k on it :coolsmiley:

You have to admit Paul that this happens to alot of cars. It's a known problem even for a non-motorheaded guy like me.

It seems my gas gauge is reading extremely accurately now. Would the air leak have caused it to read funky?
