96 explorers ONLY had the real GT40 heads just like the Cobra units. 97-01 had the GT40P, which have smaller, yet more efficient exhaust ports and valves. GT40 heads have three cast bars on their ends, P heads have four.

GT40-get a gasket kit and bolt 'em on.

GT40P--get headers, too.

on an otherwise stock motor, conventional gains are between 25 and 35 RWHP. If that sounds low, keep in mind that most head companies show 70-100RWHP with a kit, and not just the heads. If you have more done (like magic asked) you'll see more of an improvement.

It's pretty much stock. i am just looking to add some HP on the cheap because I have like no cash since I'm in school I just want to see if I can get lucky and find some in the junkyard in the near by area.

Keep saving money for a better heads/cam/intake upgrade....trust me....

You also have to take into account that you'll have to get these heads cleaned, a valve job done and you'll DEFINITELY need new springs.

Also running a stock HO intake on top of these is counterproductive so grab an explorer intake too.

And nothing is wrong with being on a tight budget and just going with GT40 iron stuff. Throw a cheap OTS cam like the TFS1 into the mix and you've got a pretty decent HCI.

But if your car is pretty much stock I'd do some of the bolt ons first before worrying about the HCI. Full exhaust, pullies, CAI(you can make these for like $30 yourself from home depot piping) etc...

+1 on the Home depot version of CAI, i rocked it in my 95 gt and went wih a custom(fenderwall) chrome one off of a V6 just for the looks. they work exaclty the same no diffrence .

For the 97-01 Explorer heads you will need P style headers. There are a million threads about the headers on corral and stangnet. Some have gotten away with the BBK longtubes though. Dont let people who don't know what they are talking about tell you the P heads are not as good because of the smaller exhaust valve. If anything they are better for it. They flow MORE with a smaller valve, meaning more velocity which is better.

YOu can run 12's with a gt40 heads, a cam (ie comp cams xe240r), and intake ( trickflow). I make 295 hp and 321 torque with this combo on a 302. I ran a 12.97 with solid lca's and double adjustable uca's. On this setup

You can run 12s on untouched gt40s/stock cam/untouched gt40 intake. Just bolt ons. I've seen it done. A friend of mine with 3.73s, full longtube exhaust, pullies, cai and the A9L conversion went 12.9 in a full weight 1994 Cobra with street tires. He did a 12.8 when he swapped in an E cam which I thought was a waste of time/money but w/e.

Too many ppl knock on the irons. They're a GREAT budget setup that makes more power than ppl think. I DO believe that getting full blown porting/polishing jobs on GT40 heads is a waste but if you just get a valve job, the egr bumps smoothed out and a gasket match they're great.

I agree with everything you just said except the gasket matching. The key to a good port job is port matching. Which is basically in essence like gasket matching except their matching port for port against each other and making sure they don't open the ports up too much.

1997 was a 1/2 year.

1997 had GT40 and GT40P. You have to look at the heads.

Yeah they transitioned over during the 97 production year at some time. And by "gasket matching" I mean matching the intake ports to the exhaust ports.
