It's a tough situation I guess. It's impossible for me to tell what your priorities are but I was in the same situation a little bit ago. I was going to trade my car straight up for a higher mileage cobra. After thinking about it, I decided to stick with and mod my car even though financially and performance wise it was not the best idea. I kept it because it was my first car and what I had worked for for the past 3 or 4 years. Plus, I paid WAY more for the car than I will ever be able to sell it for so I knew I would take a financial hit, plus the cobra wouldn't be as nice, and insurance would be a little more.
If you sold the cobra, I think you'd be lucky to get $8500 for it around where I live and mustangs go for top dollar around here. If the person knows what they are looking at, they will know burning oil means rebuild in the near future which means big time money, especially on a 4 valve.
