*how to flip your quad shocks*

i recently asked you all how to fit 315 tires under my rear end, and the most common response was "flip your quad shocks".. i was confused at first, but i went out and did it. so im trying to help others who might not know exactly what im talking about.

first we must understand what a quad shock is.

the quad shock is fords solution to wheelhop that plagues high horsepower machines, and normally breaks things very quicky.

corvettes suffer from this problem as well, and there is a diaper like apparatus that holds the tranny and diffy so they dont 'splode.

unfortunatly, those among us who wish to use large tires, must create the nessecary clearance to house such monsters as 315's.

soooo without further ado, here is....

**how to flip your quad shocks!!**

first, take off your wheel.

next, locate your quad shock.

third, notice the 2 bolts right behind your brakes. the one in front is welded to the wheel stub, so you cant remove it. the nut in the back is actually a long bolt, thats the one you'll need to take out. you can see ive loosened it out so you can see it better.

then take out the top bolt.

the shock should just slide off, i didnt take a picture of this step, i think it will be mostly self explanatory how to remove it.

now simply flip it and adjust it as needed.

bolt it back up and re intall your wheel.

i hope this helped everyone who was wondering how to flip quad shocks, i hope i also contributed to this site instead of simply asking questions.

im not sure if this will sticky or not, but a child can dream, cant he?

excuse the somewhat blurriness of the photos, and the extreme filth of my undercarriage, as im not used to my new camera, and i havent powerwashed the stang in a while.

thanks all!

on something this simple, no. good write up.

once you get into more complex stuff, a few things to keep in mind:

distant pictures help. ... a zoom-in of a single bolt will just confuse us, but a distant picture with the bolt in question high-lighted will help. (you can use microsoft paintbrush to draw arrows, add text, and circle things on your pictures)

once you get into specific things TQ specs, measurments, and schematic drawings....
changing a flywheel for example. you can post a schematic of the clutch assembly for a break-down view of how it is put together.
then you can do the write-up of removing and installing it, INCLUDING measurements on weights of the assembly and the flywheel.
then the TQ specs you used to tighten it all back up.. .. thats just one example.

pictures (if possible) of things NOT to do, or that have gone bad... "clearly this seal is bad, as you can see the cracks" or "these cam sprokets may appear to fit together face to face, but they go this way... .. .."

lots of details and pictures.... :)

Pros: Fit larger tires.

Cons: ???

Does it change the rating on the stock do to mounting it differently?
Does it perform the way it's suppost to still?
Anything else that might happen?

Suspension gurus?

i bought AC Delcos, which were the EXACT same size (dimensionally) as the FoMoCos that came OEM.

I put them on (flipped,) lowered teh car, and one ended up grinding on the shock and burst open.

It unloaded its juices on my floor. i removed it.

ive driven it several miles and took hard turns and i felt no difference it the performance, i also took off the wheel and saw no rubbing on either shock. i'll be sure to post it if i find something negative.

maybe not, but whats the purpose of a forum, except to help people? i could have very much used this sticky before i flipped my quads. (albiet, i did get it figured out...)

i think if we help but just one confused person, it would be worth it.

See, I told you it was just simply that easy. Probably took longer to get the tire off then it did to flip the quad shock.

Congrats on a successful flip.

yeah the forum is to help people, but the search function works well most of the time and the rare case where someone really can't figure it out and can't find it in the search, let them just make a post. No big deal ya know, it's a nice write up though.

Very simple procedure that only works on stock factory shocks. No need to sticky.

If you wan't you could just move this to the "How To" section, but def no need to sticky.

Also when you do a write up don't use slang terms. Obviously we know what a "tranny" and "diffy" is but someone who needs help on flipping a quad shock may not know the terms. Always use the proper terms to eliminate any possible confusion.
