Impact VS Regular Sockets.

I just picked up a cordless Craftsman 19.2V Impact Wrench to use at the track for taking off my wheels when I put the slicks on b/c wrenching the lug nuts on/off by hand tends to suck. The problem is the impact sockets are to thick to fit in the holes of my Cobra R wheels which I take off to put the weld wheels on w/ the slicks. Am I going to explode the regular socket by using it in the impact wrench to take my wheels off? I dont have to much of an issue wrenching the street rims off/on but Id like to avoid it if I can.

You may crack a socket or 2 but it wont happen right away, get some craftsmen or snap on with a warranty and just go to town, I have used my craftsmen with my 14v snapon impact at the track for 2 years now and those sockets have taken apart 1 iron and 1 aluminum 4.6.... you'll be fine

my regular set of sockets are craftsman anyway. Considering Id only be using it to take off the lug nuts it probably wont put to much stress on it b/c I can use the impact socket to put the track wheels on/off. Only takes 85-100 ft lbs to break loose a lug nut to begin with.

yeah as long as you use a high quality socket like Craftsman or something then u should be fine

don't forget a good torque wrench when you put the wheels on.
if your afraid of breaking the socket do what Duff said and break them free manually then use the impact to spin them off.

I wouldn't call craftsman high quality anymore. maybe 20 years ago. snap-on, mac, matco, hell I'd buy husky or kobalt before craftsman.

I have a TQ Wrench but I never take it with me. Ive always hand tightened the lug nuts and have not had a wheel come off yet lol

+1. You should at least use a "wobble stick". They keep you from over torquing with the impact. Using a reg socket probably wont ever be a problem. I'd just buy the socket you need from craftsman and dedicate it for that.

I have the Craftsman Deep impact socket set and they fit perfectly fine with room to spare in my 03 cobra lug holes.

Thats what I was thinking, not enough TQ to destroy the regular sockets on occasional use.

there is a thin wall socket that is made for taking off lug nuts with a small clearance. they also have one with a plastic sleeve so you do not scratch them.

harbor freight sells dirt cheap impact sockets, and we use them at our shop. In 5 yrs. not one of them has broken.

craftsman is the brand i use. and i have trashed probly 3 sets of tools from them. at least they replace them without any bs.

humm never used one before, Ive seen them but never really knew what they were used for. I'll probably pick one of those up too. Whats a good TQ rating for the wheels, 90ft lbs?
