Is there anything special to dropping in a PI motor? can i pull my NPI, plug everything in, and drive away? i was thinking a professional tune would be a good idea, but beyond that... anything special?

if you run your timing cover everything is direct and you can ditch the cops and use your existing ignition,

throw long tubes in there while you have the room, because you'll kick yourself in the ass later if you don't do it now..

cams too.

engine hoist ftw

Keep the stock Fuel rails, ECU, Wiring harness (yes that means the 2 coil packs stay),

The plug is different for the PI Alternator so you'll need a new Alt plug.

Tap the coolant temp sensor.

If you get a 99/00 PI engine then you'll need a new clutch and possibly a Flywheel if the engine doesn't come with one.

Don't disconnect your A/C lines just unbolt it from the block. (this is of course if your A/C still works.)

There's a few more small things but it's as easy as Sunday morning. I did mine by myself in less than 24 hours.

I have an 03 longblock with my NPI alternator. I don't see why you wouldn't be able to unless you do NOT use your old timing cover...

The bracket to the alternator wont fit. For the life of me I have no idea how you have it on.

yeah, the NPI bracket dont fit, but you can grab the PI bracket from a dealer. or if you have a NPI intake with alum. x-over, you can swap it off the old intake to the PI intake, its 6 bolts, and you dont have to drill, tap, or buy a new bracket.

i got the new bracket from a dealer close to me, think i paid 15 bucks.

Alternator Bracket - F8AZ-10153-EA is what you need.

lol, you read my mind.

okay, so use my old timing cover and my old alternator braket... thats not too bad..

IM looking at getting a 2001 motor. will i run into tranny issues? i know they swaped over to the 3650 or whatever the hell it is in mid 00 or mid 01 or something... will my T45 bolt up okay?

on the list:
Use old timing cover
Use old alternator braket
Drill and tap intake manifold
machine flywheel
leave A/C unit in the car when i pull old motor

Just for the record, the reason im doing this is my Crankshaft underdrive pulley broke (previous owner put it on.) when we removed the bolt, it pulled litterally all the threads out of the crank... so we figured "lets lock-tite it." ... so we did... and we let it sit for about 2 days and we got to thinking that that bolt is litterally a peg inside of a hole with some glue on it............ not a good idea. lol.

we drilled and tapped the crankshaft and put in a helicoil. after about 7 attempts everything was bolted up and looked pretty good... except my Steeda timing adjuster wasnt sitting properly... mind you this was our 8th helicoil from an $80.00 kit... mind you this is the crankshaft bolt... mind you we have lock-tited the living day lights out of the helicoil and bolt before putting it in... we do NOT want to take that bolt out...

So we decided to just not use the steeda timing adjuster and to just put it back to stock. but leave the gear on the front. well we put it all back together and start it and that steeda timing gear flops around like a fish out of water... so we shim it with a dime... still going crazy... I just want a motor to drop into the car to drive while i rebuild this one... A PI motor is all that i can find... that and a 5.4L... but i dont know what's involved in a 5.4 swap either... lol.

anyways, this motor has to come out and i was hoping to just drop something in. any suggestions? my stock motor might be on the stand for a year or two until its fully built....

Why are you using your timing cover?? Doesn't the new engine have one? All the accessories bolt right up

i thought i had to so the altnernator would fit...

or can i just use the alternator thats on it already?

the new motor is running... so... yea... is it just:

unbolt old motor from bell housing and motor mounts
unplug old wiring and harnesses
pull motor
drop in new motor
plug everything back in.
re-use non-COP ignition (how will these mount with the new timing cover?)
bolt to bell housing and motor mounts
drive to professional tuner

:)

or did i get mixed up somewhere?

Not to throw a wrench in here (pun intended) but why not do a 5.4 while youir at it?
Only difference is a few more steps...

1: get some Adapter plates for the PI intake.
2: switch oil pan and oil pickup onto 5.4 from 4.6
3: need to grind a little of passenger (or driver, one or the other) flange on manifold to fit into bay
4: get exhaust mid pipe legnthened to fit to headers correctly
5: May need different flywheel...cannot remember.

6: show tail's to PI 4.6's :)

Look over at http://mustangboards.com/modular-4-6l-tech/9238-anyone-intrested-5-4l-swaps-here-need-you-opine.html
for all of the information on the 5.4 swap. It rocks! Its the route I'm going...I just got a shortblock to start rebuilding...already have cams and I'm ordering ported PI's for the thing in the next few weeks. God bless more displacement!!

However this is just all my opinion :)

my final motor assembly will probably be a 4.6L, therefore I dont want to go to all the hassle of a 5.4 for teh added benifit for 12 months of a motor. lol.

My brackets still mounted perfectly to the 99W timing cover and they will for the 01+R
