How tough is it to rebuild our 4R70Ws. Thinking about doing it myself:eek:. I have plenty of tools. Is there any specific ones I would need? Only thing sucks is gonna be pulling the trans on stands or ramps.

I used to build c4 and c6. Those are the easy ones
automatic overdrive transmissions require special tools and if I remember correctly they need to be reprogrammed on the shift solenoid valve body
Been a while something to think about

One more thing I highly recommend the B@M shift important kit if your going to tare into it
There are two kits in one street is mild
Strip is awesome but can not be changed back it's a done deal
Steet can be changed back to stock
And will not need any program

I f I do it, I'm gonna build it bullet proof. Hardened shaft... Gigidty... upgraded bands and what not. I already have a worked TC in it now, it's not to high a stall it's at 2800 stall so it's still has DD drivability if I want too.

How bad is strip for drivability (not that it's gonna be a DD)? I know there are better kits, but is B&M the preferred kit?

You will feel the difference I will shift harder and quicker
Depending on how fast your going set 45 to 68 step on that pedal all the way the ass end will step out from under you
I have 373 and 285 45 on the rear

Silinoid on valve body I think needs program
When I installed the shift kit on my trans
I was told by one of my old buddies at ford that the computer will learn as you drive on shifting points
So when installed mine I let the computer reset and learn

Sorry I missed this. The first thing I will recommend is that you watch the video series on you tube AODE/4r70w school. It’s a series and I’ll like the first video here. It shows exactly how to build it and how to make the special tools you’ll need. Over all it’s a pretty easy trans.

Don’t bother with a “shift kit” in this trans, look up the 4r70w J-mod. It was made by the fella that helped design the trans and doesn’t require replacing anything, just removing some accumulator springs and drilling some holes in the separator plate.

For parts, you’re going to want a billet forward drum, hardened stub shaft, upgraded intermediate sprag (mechanical diode), and a sonnax zip kit. That fixes a few different problems, but do not use the stator shaft seals from the zip kit, they are a pain in the ass and aren’t worth fighting. I’m sure I’ll think of more, my brain is a little foggy right now.

@lwarrior1016 is right. JMOD it over the shift kits.

Find a rebuild kit that uses Raybestos, Exedy, Or Borg Warner HE frictions and steels. No need or should you want the alto reds or really any "racing" frictions.

ATSG rebuild manual is a must.

If you want everything in one package transmission Bench, BCA Transmission, Silverfox all have ready to build kits.

Thanks lwarrior, are you talking about Transmission Bench on YouTube? If so, that's the first thing I started watching. Where is the best place to get that hardened shaft...gigidty., and billet forward drum?

I was looking at this shaft and trans kit:

Definitely I'd say no on that rebuild kit. It has a shift kit included which is not needed.

Here is an option to look at:

https://cyclonetransmission.com/pro...plete-heavy-duty-stage-3-with-sonnax-upgrades

There are many was to skin this cat.

Want a very very good kit? https://www.bcawebstore.com/index.php?l=product_detail&p=51

What HP/TQ, Power adder, & Trans use?

I would call BCA. You will be putting some torque though it.

I bet he says 300m Input, Drum, and Stub.

That BCA stuff looks pretty good, and is a decent price for what you get. I typically order all my parts through Transtar, just because I used to do business with them and they have always treated me right.

Look through the Sonnax website and get the part numbers for the stuff you need and then you can even look en eBay.

Which one out of these, do I need the extra plates in the plate kit, or is the 1st one enough. I'll be getting a hardened shaft and billet drum as well.

I'd go with the extra plate.

If you are serious about ordering I think on his website you can put through the options you want in the kit. Then select phone order on the payment screen. Then you can talk to him about the parts and the combination before you order.
