sandblasting is not a substitute for sanding unless your ultimate goal is to completely strip what your working on to the bare base material (weather it be plastic, metal or other)

what exactly are you working on?

media blasting setups can cost anywhere from $50+ an air compressor into the thousands, main thing here is we need to know what your working on

I just need something to ease the process of sanding rims because i paint a couple rims here and there and need something to strip whats on the rims already off. For exampe if its already painted or whatever.

Get to sanding.

Air compressors big enough to keep up with a good size blast cabinet are pretty expensive. I have a two-stage 80 gallon compressor with a 7.5 hp motor on it to keep up when I'm blasting.

Alternatively, you could just bring the wheels to a blasting place and see what their lot charge is to blast them.

look into northern tool and equipment or even summitt racing. Both will have blasting booths. As Paul has stated already stated a booth big enough for a wheel is going to about $500 plus another grand for a compressor big enough for the booth. and add to that the blasting media.
Sand is pretty aggressive too. other alternatives are plastic media, walnut shell, and aluminum oxide.

if your dead set on it take them to a shop and they should be able to blast all four for under $100-150

you wont get good results with a tool as you'll have an uneven surface, just call around and see how much shops in your area charge

I guess that make sense. What about sanding with low grit sandpaper??? If sandblasting is the only option i guess i'll just do that then.

You dont need a booth to sandblast wheels, I have done two sets outside

Just make sure you put something underneath to protect the surface and be prepared to clean up a bit of sand mess after

So say I still wanna go through with getting my own setup what's exactly needed?? What size compressor would be just enough for this?

It really depends on what type of demand you have, what pressure you're running, hose size, media, finish removal demands, etc.

I burnt out three motors on your average 5 hp ~12 CFM 60 gallon compressor before upgrading to the one I have now.

Only thing it would get used for is getting the finish off the rims that i paint.

That can be difficult sometimes, especially if the powdercoating on the wheels is any good. You could look into chemical strippers to help ease the process. Aircraft stripper and other really bad carcinogenic chemicals work great. :)

So good old sandpaper and elbow grease wont work. I always paint stock rims so sanding dont really a big deal but since these rims was brought black im wondering will a really low grit sandpaper do the job if not i guess i'll try the aircraft stripper out.

blasting cabinet is a box with rubber gloves that stick through the front and a door on the side, and a glass top. It keeps the sand from flying everywhere, and allows you to work continually because the sand is recycled.
60 gal is a good size compressor, But the important # is the compressor and how many cfm's it puts out @ a given pressure, compared to the specs on the blasting cabinet
