School me on transmission rebuilding!

I've been thinking about getting my transmission rebuilt fairly soon, it's about time, what could I expect to pay a shop to do it? Also some people say it's better to find a used one instead? What's the best route I should take?

I've thought about this route as well but don't think I have enough mechanical knowledge and tools. =S

I paid around $1000 for the removal, complete rebuild and re-installation of my trans. That was several years ago though.

costs depends on what hard parts are needed but a simple rebuild (bearings and soft parts) if you hand the person the trans should be 400-500
