Smoke and stink from compressor?

Last night I was driving in my 95 GT with AC on. Suddenly the AC didn't give any cool air and I started smelling a stink like a burning smell. I pulled over and opened the hood slowly and found the compressor giving smoke. Turned off the AC right away and switched off the car.

I then brought loads of water and got the compressor to cool down. Took it to the mechanic who actually had to work on the steering of the car, told him about the problem and he said it might be the compressor clutch. He will look into it.

My question is, why did this happen? My cousin said that I accelerated harsh with AC on that's why it happened. Isn't the car supposed to handle acceleration? On top of that I didn't race a bit, I was cruising and I never do that, it's too precious to destroy!

*Guys I'm in the middle east so I need AC here, it's too hot!*

well the reason things break on a car is Time and Distance. You could have a clutch going but your gonna have to look. Sometimes you can shim the clutch, other times its just smarter to replace the compressor as a unit.

Alright, so I guess the compressor would need a change before the real summer here kicks in next year!

Noob questions
Is the compressor clutch actually in the compressor?
If I change the compressor then no clutch problems?
How are the remanufactured compressors off ebay for $80?

Oh ok, so the pulley is the clutch! Alright, I will see what the mechanic says and consider cost with options. Will come back for advice though. Thanks.

You should replace it. Out there the heat get's pretty extreme. You will want a good solid part for the conditions it will be working in. Why it smoked...? My guess is overuse, or it might not be engaging, or disengaging. When you put a new one in, verify it works properly and does what you command it to. Good Luck

I would also recommend replacing it with new R134 refrigerant and PAG oil or, If it has R12 then use mineral oil. When you recover the oil and measure it. If the ammount measured is less than 3oz add 3 oz. If the ammount measured is more than 5oz add 5oz. Also replace o-rings. Then recharge whole system.

take the clutch off and look at it, i will take you less then 5 minutes with the right tools. it might just be too large of a air gap but the clutch could be wiped out from all the smoke you are describing.

and at wot the eec turns the a/c compressor off so you can beat all you want on the car and it will not affect the a/c compressor

and as origionally posted you could try to shim it depending on what for spec is for a tolerance

The guy said the compressor is fine but I need to replace the coil, clutch, bearings, and the pulley.

I checked with Ford and got a quote of $180 for them. Now in this country I wouldn't want to drive a car without A\C, I will literally melt! I think I'm going to buy those parts to get the AC fixed.

The guy tried to fix it and I paid him. Next day it had the same problem so went back and took my money back.

Now have to buy a compressor.
