It would just engine brake. Car would slow down on compression. It's a preference but I've found it easier on the car if you just neutral brake

if you have friends that work on vehicles hit them up, maybe they can help you change it. I would do it soon or it'll be a lot of money afterwards to pay. I'll I can say is atleast yours is giving you a sign that its going, mine just went all at once. Cost me to replace that and the shaft cover on the transmission. It wasnt cool.

The rattling, check your linkage and your exhaust mid pipe or header. Besides that its a guess still.

If you want this fixed, go against your dads word and take care of it yourself if you can.

Ain't no way in hell I'd go against my dad he'd beat my ass for it and I could kiss the Mach 1 goodbye.

Make sure you get a OEM Ford throwout bearing. Don't go the cheap route or your gonna have to replace it again.

Or, if you want one that will last and not squeal, get a Timken one rather than the junk OEM one.

well if your daddy wants to be a butthole and not worry about it, drive it till it breaks and he can foot the bill to fix it
That's seriously great advice. Personally i would rather sujjest the kid take some personal responsibility for his car and maybe learn something about along the way rather than leave it all up to momy and daddy.

Anyway, If its a ticking that's just audible above general engine noise with your ear to the fender its probably just the injectors. Some ticking is normal. Sounds tinny, a bit like a clicky pen. If its a loud tapping that follows engine RPM and is more apparent on one side (usually the drivers side) it could be the valve train. If its a rattle that changes pitch or rythem its probably not directly related to the engine.

Is the exhaust stock on the car? Can you get a good video capture of the noise?

well shame302 im trying to take some responsibility but theres not much i can do because i really dont know much about cars but im trying to get there. andyes its the stock exhaust. i would get a vid of it but it would be impossible to. the ONLY time it does it is when i come to a stop at say a stop sign or red light after driving. it goes for a few seconds then goes away until the next time i stop. it never ticks at idle, or when im driving. i can rev the engine at idle and i wont get a tick either.

I hate to say it, but if your dad won't let you do anything, then there's nothing to do. Just enjoy the car and when it breaks, fix it. Its not that big of a deal. The noises should raise concern with him but if they don't, then I wouldn't worry about it. At this point, you're not driving by yourself and I doubt you're driving that often or very far so you don't have to worry that much about getting yourself stranded with it. Your dad halfway sounds like mine and if he believes nothing is wrong, then there isn't ANYTHING wrong with it. So go with it. When it breaks, then you guys will have to fix it.

Enjoy the car til he takes it away. I know all to many folk that there parents buy them whatever car they wanted, they want to do things to it, ma and pa say no, eventually take the car away for some unannounced reason and they end up just buying what they want. When you have title in hand you can talk, but when your old man is giving you a hard time about it, I wouldn't call it yours so to speak. This is by no means knocking you, I'm just giving you a heads up what can happen.

Enjoy it till it blows up. When it turns itself into a boat, pick up a truck or a mustang. It's not yours, its not your problem.

That's about all you can do. If he won't let you, then don't. When it blows up, let the mess fall in his lap.

Your dad hands you the keys, you drive it, you tell him its fubbared, it needs to be fixed, he says dont worry about it, it fubbars itself unsurprisingly, not your fault. Kind of like driving a company truck, and it blows up. lol

Seriously, don't worry about it. Hell, it could actually just be nothing. No offense, but you really don't know that much about cars and you actually could be overreacting. Don't get me wrong, it could just as easily be messed up, but I'm just saying. If your dad won't let you work on it, then don't mess with it. Enjoy it. I would have killed to be rolling around in a Mach 1 then, even a fudged up one. If it blows, it blows. I'm sure you and your dad will fix it then, and you'll be back to rolling around in it. Cars break, cars get fixed, its how it goes.

Nope, you can have an open title. I had my first car at 6 years old.. and i'm not joking. Had it till I was 10. 69 f100 short bed, C notched, leaf springs flipped, AOD w/302 2bbl and bent front I beams. Old truck was on the ground but looked cool as hell. First car I paid cash for was a 67 fastback for 1500 bucks. I was about 11 or 12.

What you're hearing may just be valvetrain noise. I've heard that 01 cobra's are bad about a ticking noise coming from the passenger side head, not really hurting anything, just more or less annoying. You have basically the same motor, who knows what it is. A video would help alot.
