Mmkay. But scions are still being made...
Who cares? Your not buying stock in the freaking company are you? It looks alright and if its fast its cool with me. I would rather have an ok looking car that hauls ass than a better looking car that is a slow piece of shit. Too many guys gotta rely on their car to get chicks.....
That's exactly the thing though. In the 80's Stang's looked goofy compared to Camaro's, like overgrown Tempo's or something... The IROC was long, low, sleek, pretty nifty car. The Stang would walk all over one though, in just about any form. And yet.... The Fbody far and away outsold the Stang...
Part of the 5.0's appeal was that they ALL HAD THE SAME MOTOR, every single 5.0, until the 93 Cobra, had the exact same motor as any other V8 optioned car that year. You could spend 12k on a LX and get the same motor as Mr. Big's optioned up, leather, convertible GT. Made it alot easier for everyone to go fast, and alot easier for the aftermarket to get some part's out to the masses.
Now meanwhile, down the road in Warren, GM was screwing the pooch. Their ad campaign was strong, but their engineer's... confused. You could get a 305 in carb'd, TBI, or TPI, all in the same year! 350's, but only with auto's. It's hard to find two Camaro's with the same drivetrain, unless it's a weak/suck 305 TBI/700r4 combo. Didn't matter though, the car sold on the basis of it's looks.
Fast forward ten year's, SN's creep along the street, living in mortal fear of the mighty LS1. A simple fact is, an LS1 Camaro can crap on an SN from a height so high, you'll think God himself just kicked your ass.
But man those SN's are sexy... They look great, underpowered, confused engineer's, handle like crap, but they look good. And they outsold the Fbodies in a big way...
Wonder why? I'll tell you why, people only want to look/sound fast. Period. They'll act like they are car guy's, they'll go to Woodward, or the dragstrip and stand in front of their rides, but they ain't never, ever gonna do more than a shifter, catback, and cold air kit.
People who push the boundaries, are looking to make double the factory rating, looking to knock 1/3 off the factory 1/4 mile time, want to cut 15 seconds off their time at Mid Ohio, these people are the lunatic fringe. Most people just want to look cool. And that's fine, to each his own, but it is what it is.
The Camaro will sell based on novelty alone, simple as that. The reason it looks the way it does? GM got complaint after complaint the GTO looked too bland, so this is more aggressive.
Personally, I think all the "retro" car's can suck my balls, starting with the beloved Mustang. Ford built that car in 1968, get a damn new idea. But then, I feel the same way about cover songs, and movie remakes...
