My dad found this picture in a nostalgia picture thread on some random forum. Its from around 1963-1965 and it's him in his A/Gas '41 Willys. The car at this time had a GMC supercharged 426 Chrysler Wedge motor and ran around high 9's with a B&M Hydro trans.
Interesting little tidbit, In this picture the car is labeled as being entered in B/Gas. My dad said that when they would go to a race, if Big John Mazmanian, or Stone Woods and Cook, or any of those guys would show up, that they would unscrew the ends of the large pipe that's acting as a rear bumper on the car and fill it with lead weights and enter B/Gas, and usually do pretty well. The car apparently held the Arizona record for A/Gas style cars for a while there too.
Pretty cool.
Here are some more pictures of the old man in the Willy's and the MAverick that he used to drive for Don's Hot Rod Shop.
This is the MAverick that he drove in the early 70's. This car ran mid 9's with the 426 Wedge out of the Willy's and eventually had a Ford Cammer in it. Pretty crazy stuff.
Just for some perspective - in the 60's and early 70's there wasn't such a thing as "race" gas. So basically these cars ran mid to high 9's with superchargers taken off of GMC diesel trucks, with mechanical fuel injection and pump gas. Bad Ass.
