just completed my trick flow h/c/i about two weeks ago, have only put maybe 15 miles on the car since. Heres my mods, trick flow top end, kit tfs stage 1 cam, msd ignition, 65mm TB, 19# injectors, walbro 255lph, stock 70mm MAF, aeromotive fpr, 180 thermo, bbk fenderwell CAI, bbk underdrive pullies..I have 24# injectors but not going to put them on tillI figure out what im doing about a tune. My first question is, the car isnt much faster then it was stock it seems, i have the timing at 16* and it seems to run well there. The car is running a bit warmer then what it did before the install. its running around the A on normal and idle and around the RM during cruising, the fan does cut on and theres no boiling water, i notice that the radiator cap doesnt get very hot, maybe air pockets? And last but not least my cold idle bounces up and down till the car gets warm, then it idles decent, everyonce in awhile it will stall out or idle pretty rouch, I had to set the idle near 900 rpms just to get it to idle without stalling....all in all im a little dissapointed that the car doesnt seem very quick at all for all the money ive spent and all the time on the car the past two months....am i overlooking anything? what should I do or look for...?

Get a tune, i picked up about 40rwhp after i got mine. If you get the tune might aswell go 24# injectors ;)

First make sure you have no vac leaks. Next do a base idle reset. play with your timing. Just because it will take 16? does not mean you make more power there also try 12.14. See if it runs any better.

i did the base idle reset, I tried 12* timing and the car didnt act right, so I went up to 16 and havent backed it down yet...I kept seeing guys in the forums running 16* or higher, so I thought 16 would be plenty, but I can give it a try and see how it acts..

could the timing being at 16, have something to do with my car running a little warm or my slight idle issue?? I know if the timing is off it can cause a vehicle to run hot? am I right?

Tune it. God knows how lean it's running right now. Considering that you went from a completely stock motor to a completely different top end, but your computer at WOT still thinks that it's feeding a much more restricted motor. The reason why you are running hotter is probably because you are detonating like crazy

I'm not really a huge fan of mail order tunes, or tuning with programmers and stuff like that. You can get pretty close to where you need to be with those items, but you can also get it pretty wrong, mostly because you are working with ball park tuning, and it will never be perfect to where you need it to be. I've seen a few times power programmers which lost power on dyno over stock tune. I would say that dyno tuning, or worst case street tuning with wideband is an absolute must. Dyno will give you actual results every time, so you will be able to see if something is working or not.

get a tune for one and back that timing down. you're probably running really lean like said.

az dyno chip down in chandler did mine when I still lived there. Too bad I had to move or I would help ya out with it. You just did a similar upgrade with only a couple of changes and I have been struggling since with running even after ordering a chip/tune(an option for you) which is not too bad to install.

Did you install your cam straight up dot to dot or did you degree it with a degree wheel? i installed mine straight up and am missing a lot of power which i'm gonna attribute to it being too far advanced or retarded.

Where are you located ? I have a chassis dyno at my shop now if you want to come for a dyno tune , $400 and that includes the chip

my address is
2276 Magnolia Dr.
Bedford VA 24523

If you aren't close enough to drive and want it perfect I would suggest doing 24lbs injectors , get a wideband on the car and order the chip and burner kit I have so you can get email tunes from me and this way we can dial it in alot better , I just picked a guy up on corral up .9 tenths in quarter mile

There is nothing wrong with a mail order tune as long as the air/fuel is checked with a wideband

my tuner wouldnt set my timing higher than 12-13 on a 5.0. he was saying if you're a good enough tuner, there is no need to max out timing in order to make power.

2002blgt* are you the shop that does all dyno tunes for High End Auto?

Not exactly LOL , call me 540-875-8722 and I will give you the ends and outs of that operation LOL , there is a shop that dynos those cars , most of them are not tuned though , they are just dynoed so that car dealer can give a dyno graph with the cars they sell , but I am getting alot of business from up that way.

That's a steal.

I paid $650 for dyno time, chip & tune. The guy I use is a little more pricey but he is top notch as he raced NMRA Pro 5.0 but $400 is a steal.

Nice to see people that are more reasonable with tuning, especially in todays economy.
