Where does the starter get its power from?

Obviously the battery.. but, I have the starter power wire coming up from the starter, and if I touch the battery it cranks the engine.. but, I can't seem to remember where this guy hooked on to. Is it a fuse/relay? A wire coming from the power distribution center? Hook it up to the bolt coming off of the power distribution center?

Where should I send this wire?

I was thinking about running it to the cigar lighter or something, then to the battery.. so in order to start the car, you'd have to push the cigar lighter.. that'd be cool.. but, for simpler sakes, where does this wire go?

The BIG wire should be DIRECTLY to the battery or distribution block, which is hooked directly to the battery. The smaller trigger wire should be a 12volt switch source....off of whatever your heart desires. The iginition switch should be the obvious thing. You're doing a V6 conversion though right? What year is the motor you're putting in the car? Does the starer have the solenoid/bendix right on it?

Yeah solenoid is on the starter.. big wire is hooked up.. small wire needs to go to the 12v switch as you stated.. when I touched it to the + battery terminal, the engine cranked.. What i'm trying to figure out here is where I can tap into the 12v power for when I turn the key to 'start'? It seems like the only thing that would power is the starter.. so it must be a specific wire somewhere..

When you turn the key to START, the ignition, starter, and fuel pump takes priority over EVERYTHING ELSE but when you let go and it goes back to RUN, the pump and ignition STAY on while the starter shuts off....SO, you have to find the original wire off the ignition switch that goes cold when the key is released. I don't know off the top of my head and don't know where to find a chassis wiring diagram online but if I were at home, and had a chilton's or hayne's I could probably tell you. What year and model was your car originally?

thats a charging system diagram....I need a chassis electrical. That only shows the power wire going to the starter...not the trigger.

Its alright, I ran it to a button in the car, and it's working beautifully. Thanks!

That sounds cool. Throw up a pick of the button.

So how does it work... do you need to press the button AND turn the key, or have the key in the ignition and push the button... or what? This sounds too cool - I might have to do it. ;)

It's just a button.. you don't have to turn the key to 'start', you just hold down the button and it cranks the starter. All I did was run that wire from the starter through the button, then the other side of the button to an ignition wire. So you get in the car, turn the key to 'on', then you can press the button to start the car instead of turning the key a little bit farther.

I plan on hiding the button too.. anti-theft device as well :)

That's awesome - I'm definitely doing that! You da man! :pimp:

Just gotta find a cool normally-open momentary button now. 8)
