I'd look at getting drive-ability things fixed before swapping in a cam man. Plus more power on an already hurting rear end=disaster. You USUALLY can't half-ass modding. Either do it right or it will end up costing more in the end. I saved and did everything when I had the chance, and I'm glad I did.

Best bet is to get a gear set and get a rebuild kit for it and just rebuild your current one, it'll be cheaper, better, and easier than swapping the whole rear end.

Yeah i did a set of FRPP 3.73 and rebuilt the trac lock with the Carbon disc kit for 700. That's including Labor and all the fluids

I got used gears for $80 and got my uncle to install, he didn't want any money but I felt obliged to give him some so he got $100 :). I'm really happy with it too, he did an amazing job and I have no gear noise or howls at all. Sadly, I doubt the rear end will stand up to my new combo too long before I burn the clutch packs out. Detroit locker is looking very good in the near future ;).

You would be suprised what the rear can handle. The 28 spline is actually a little stronger then the 31 spline trac lock. The spider gears in the 28 spline are stronger. There are many instances where people have run very fast times on stock trac lock and axles. The only reason i rebuilt mine was b/c it was already out why not. if your ever worried about things just throw a set of hardened 28 spline axles in there. Until you get to some serious power it should be all you need.

I'd also say he has the driver mod.

I wouldnt say he has the driver mod, cause he cant launch or shift that well, I think the only reason he caught me is cause of my gears and his mods. I had about 3-4 lengths on him, never missed a shift or anything. Im in the process of finding some 3:73 gears now...

Well whoever re did my gears, didnt do a good job, so they howl, and i think my teacher told me the backlash is off. They occasionally clunk when i shift hard too, so im trying to take it easy on them.. key word trying. I usually dont race. It seems like the endplay on them is off too, cause they move back and forth a lot while in gear on a lift....I inspected the gears with my teacher and he was tell me the wear pattern is on the outside of the gears.

it sounds like you're in an auto class. put it on the lift, get a shim kit, and re-set the backlash. Problem solved. A great learning experience for the class and a very basic automotive service.

if you're paying to buy aftermarket gears, get steeper than 3.73s, especially with the lack of power your setup has.
