Hate to bump an old thread but im trying to retrofit my own MINI d2s into my headlights and i CANNOT for the life of me open up these aftermarket lenses... They are DEPO brand but i ruined another pair trying to open them up the same way.

Is there a way to open them up that is effective? Im thinking about buying a heatgun and doing it inch by inch... will take forever but MAYBE it will work.

I might try and bake one of them at like 300 for 15 mins and see if that gets the glue hot enough. Things are impossible to get off.

Hello fellow mustangers. I have 2 quick questions regarding the headlights of our sn95s.

1) are the headlight housings/buckets identical between the GT and the cobras? I know the lenses are different, but how about inside the housings?

2. What steps/procedures have you taken to separate the lenses from the housings? I think the adhesive used from both aftermarket and OEM are the same. (window weld I believe) and is a pain in the $&@ to deal with. Any help here would be extremely helpful.

Thanks folks. -mike

housings are same sylvania design.

put in warm oven, let bake, remove lense.

I have been trying to seperate some rear lights and have teh same issue. I have got it soft enough to move just a itsy bits bit but I am not so sure about putting it in hotter..... I think it just takes some time and practice to learn the limits...

i dont think you can get the lens of without breaking it, what i know though is that the headlights are identical and u can just put ur bulb in the new headlight no modifications needed. I wouldn't try to remove the lens as it might break

Lens can be removed fairly easily from what I hear if you follow the right steps. There is one particular project a guy did swapping some smoked lens onto a projector headlight that wasn't offered with the smoked lens option and it worked pretty well.

However, I still stand by the fact that if you're trying to modify your GT lenses, you should just buy new headlights and save yourself the trouble.

Wow, I didn't realize how old this thread was, but yep that was me. You are totally spot on because the lenses weren't exactly perfect. I wish I would of sanded them and polished them before they went on. See avatar for the smoked projector lenses.

Preheat them in the oven and yes, then take a heat gun and do the spots where you cant get the light apart.

Ok thanks!

I had a set that i already ruined and snapped the reflector part of the housings... I think you just need to heat these things up REALLY HOT to get them out. Im thinking im going to bake the crap out of them, like 265 for 15 mins and then use a heatgun on it and just keeping going around and around until i get the lens off.

I have a spare light that i didnt ruin so ill try that before i move onto the new set.

I have done this to another pair of headlights before and it was pretty simple. I might do it to my depo projectors.. I want to see how they will look first before I paint the projector ring black... I might like them.
