with the engine running the alt. should only be putting out 14.5vdc not 18v. Sounds like the voltage regulator inside the alt.has taken a crap.

today the alternator briefly ran normal. 14.5 volts at alt and positive battery post. 6v at the stator, then is stopped working. .6 volts at stator and 12v at alt and pos battery post till the battery died

Take that ALT back and get another one. Tell them this one is not working correctly even though its passing.

If it still fails with the new ALT then you know you have another problem.

you battery might drag the voltage down on the alt but it still doesn't explain the 18v reading earlier assuming you had the meter on right.

I had the problem where pulleys were installed at the shop and they forgot to switch the belt. Everyone was blaming the electrical stuff. Switch the belt.

do you have a link to the alt's schematic? Its obviously something in what is telling the alt to charge or not. I have never looked into the schematic of how it works but I have a degree in electronics and can figure it out if you can show me where it is.

Also try stress-testing the smaller wires on top. Grab them while its running an pull/tug/twist them a little and see what happens.
