ok looking at that diagram it does look easy. Trace the wires back down as far as you can and make sure that there are no loose connections. Also see if you can find those fusable links as they might be failing once the motor heats up.

One other thought, there is a voltage regulator in the dash of the sn's that goes bad and can cause some funny problems.... Notice any heat from the instrument cluster.

i thought of the fusable links. when the alt wasnt charging. checked with ohm and found connectivity. Also when alt wasnt charging the volts read the same at the battery and "hot" wire behind alt. when the alt is charging he volts read the same as well...im thinking it has something to do with the signal that goes to the regulator on the alt.

could be any or all. To test the wires all you really do is get a little rough with them. Any connection you make should be able to take at the very least a small tug on them but honestly should be able to survive a fairly good pull on the wire. If it comes loose then there was something wrong to begin with and need to be redone. Trace the wires down across the motor and make sure they have not shorted out somewhere if the factory loom/tape were removed.

okay...i have attached a jump wire to the the green wire that goes to the gauge and interior fuse box with is explained in the above "65" 3 wire conversion diagram as the exciter wire...and the alt meter and the alt gauge jumped to 13.5 v.....trouble shooting is now focused on tracing the green wire, replaced the #18 20 amp fuse for the hell of it. no change...

just for kicks take a pass though and spend the 2 mins it takes to check EVERY fuse in the car both under the dash and under the hood.
