Just changed my thermostat and filled the coolant system with antifreeze and water 50/50/. It is 42 degrees at at the time this happened. Started the car to cycle the coolant through the block so no water pockets would freeze tonight. When i started it there was a very loud bang, thought my friend hand slammed my hood from sitting in the drivers seat so i immediately killed it. He said when i started it a cloud of smoke came from my plenum cover, i guess where the seal is. I started it back up for a second and it sounded like something was knocking but had a rattle type of sound, immediately killed it after hearing that. Also the car had run out of gas prior to this, i had just put a bit over a gallon in it before started it up, did let the fuel system prime before starting. am i fcked????

Was it a loud banging from the bottom end of the motor? If so, yeah, u might wanna pull the motor. If its a light tap, give the valves a look over.

Plenum cover? You mean the upper intake?

And if its a rattle, that could be bearings, but the sound would come from the bottom of the motor. Your description isnt the best, my advice is to take it to someone qualified to give you an actual in person diagnosis.

there is a decent possibility that if you didnt fill it from the thermostat housing you might now have had enough water in it to fill the block back up due to fords great idea of having the overflow tank run into the bottom hose. try filling it up by pulling the thermostat then try to start again make sure to burp the system. the sound could be coming from the water pump and or the water jackets just pushing air thought them instead of coolant, had this happen the first time i flushed mine hope it helps you out.

Thats not how you do it on a 4v. You fill it up via the coolant crossover
