you will definitely have ptv contact with a cam at that large of a duration. ask me how i know. i just tried to install VT stage 3 blower cams which are 238/242 and i have stock manley 18cc pistons w/ stock valves and it wasnt even close to being degreed correctly, i swapped them in for custom bullet racing cams and they are grinding me 220/230 531/573 114lsa and this should be about the max that bullet said i can get away with with enough clearance for unmodified pistons/stock valves

again, that is not what this threads about, if I have problems with ptv my engine builder will deal with it since he guaranteed no clearance issues.

I'm just trying to figure out what I should think about replacing while i have the valve covers off and the timing cover.

chains, tensioners, maybe guides, crank gear because i think 99 had a 2 piece design that chewed cranks. if you are dropping the engine have a look at the trigger wheel for cracks. older ones are prone to cracking from thrust bearing issues. thats all i have for upgrade or replacing. TFS chains from summit are decently priced, TFS tensioners are decently priced and not plastic lined, i bought a ford trigger wheel and the 1 piece crank gear. thats the direction id give you. upgrading to something nicer.. well not much to offer on these engines except adjustable cam gears and adjustable timing crank gear. my opinion those last 2 are hype.

well yeah, people have answered what you asked. everything they mentioned should be replaced while you in there, and the pistons will need to be flycut. Other than that, good to go

1) there are 2 different 1pc Crank shaft cam chain gears.
2) You can go to ford and buy the gears, ten go to ARP and get their Cam Gear bolts (not TTY as fords are)
3) Just do this, measure, degree and grind the stock key ways as needed.

Am I going to need a crank gear and trigger wheel? I don't know if the spacing is different from the Windsor or Romeo cam gears.

The keyway being grinded is for degreeing the cams right?

Yes Cam gear keyways need to be ground to allow the cam chain to advance or retard due to cam spec. As far as the Different trigger wheel, it will depend on what TIming chain crank socket you get. If its a 1pc thin or 1pc thick. If its a thin, you can use the stock wheel (i have extra if you need) if its a 1pck thick You need a new one, and I can get you the part number from ford. Its only like 30 bucks.

I have a thick trigger(reluctor wheel) so I can only help you if you get the THIN 1pc Timing Chain crank shaft sprocket. Look at the arrows, you can see the different amount of overhand which faces the Timing cover.

Romeo camshaft gears will be pisser with some ARP Camshaft bolts.

you really dont need to grind the keyway unless the said cams are out of advertised specs and cause PTV contact.

Cam swap including how to set timing and degree the cams.

A how to on degreeing, there are about 10 different methods. All I can suggest is people who want your cams degreeded, you need to realize there is over 500.00 in just in tools, then the extra time it takes to do it. For some people its much easier to pay someone to do the swap and degree for them because they would be spending the same amount on tools they may never need again.

The cam swap is quite straight forward, once again, more then 1 way to do it, and parts needed will vairy depeind on car mileage, and prior repairs.

Well my plan in the future is do to a full heads/cams swap on an NPI motor. If possible I'd like to do it myself. But I may just do what I can and have a shop do the rest.
