I was thinking about getting a new throttle body (probably BBK) for my first performance mod. Is this a good choice for a first mod?

V6 right?

Wouldn't be my first mod.

Money would be better saving up towards rear end gears. That would be a more difficult project depending on your skill level though. Will be best bang for your buck on a V6.

Then after that I would start looking into split port swapping or super coupe supercharger swap or v8 swap. All requiring a fairly high skill level.

If you don't care about performance a ton and just want your engine bay to look nicer then you could look at cold air intakes?

Either way, a throttle body would probably not be my first mod. That's just my opinion though.

Throttle body is basically a giant waste of time with those single port heads on there.

You could probably do a split port swap for the same price and get around a 40 horse gain.

Or as Orange said, do the rear end first. I built the rest of the car before doing the rear end, I wish I would have gone the other way around.

Oh goodness that's a lot. Is there anything more simple you guys would suggest for my first engine tinker around?

Rear end gears if you are looking for performance.

Cold air intake if you want your engine to look better. You can also pull off parts and paint/polish them for cheap?

Short throw shifter for driver mod. (Assuming manual, if auto you can get one of those BBK kits)

Lowering springs for exterior appearance.

I heard installing cold air intakes would do wonders for a car's fuel efficiency and horse power. So I guess that would be a great first mod.

The rear end gears transfer power from the drive shaft to the axles. You can change the ratio of the gear.

To my knowledge cold air intakes have a minimal affect, more appearance mod.

Ideally you would source a 8.8 rear end, rebuild it with your desired gears and then swap your rear end out.

Probably too big of a job for a first timer haha.

Yea, swapping a rear would be a pretty big undertaking for someone not familiar.

On these cars, the intake is already pretty good, so a cold air intake does basically nothing. In some cases, they actually hurt performance because they are made of a metal that ends up getting very hot, and bringing hotter air into the motor.

I know the split port swap scared you, but break it down like this:

You are unbolting your intakes, unbolting your heads. I think in total there are like 30 bolts, that all look pretty much the same. You are cleaning the surfaces off, then slapping on a different set of heads and intakes while putting on new gaskets.

This would be a good time for a coolant and oil change.

I would not say do the cam, because that's a bit more of an undertaking, but heads and intakes is literally undoing bolts and putting them back in, just in a particular order.

Otherwise, do what Orange said, pull parts off, and put them back on cleaned up and painted. Make it look good.

Ok well let me rephrase lol. What would you guys recommend as a first mod for someone who lets say has no car/ engine experience whatsoever? Or is there nothing I can do without a lot of experience?

Lets find out what your goals are for the car first. Just want to find something fun to do and work on it? Do you want to go faster or do you want to just add your own touch of aftermarket to it? Post up some photos of how your engine bay, exterior and interior look and I could give you plenty of advice on something simple and affordable to do to it.

KNN if you really want to get one. They tend to be the best about actually being a cold air intake. Them or Steeda probably.

I like the idea of pulling off easy parts to get to, and painting them. or taking off old vacuum lines and replacing them, and routing them nicer and neater.

When I was younger I was all about adding lighting everywhere, and changing all the bulbs to LED's. That's a very simple thing to do that really makes the car much nicer.

Clean & detail everything & keep it that way is first thing. A super clean older car will still turn heads & garner compliments from most everyone as it shows you are a car enthusiast... Example, we had an 89 Escort station wagon in the family once. My teenage son was embarrassed to take it as "his" car to drive. His friends laughed at it. After a Total detailing inside & out to the Nth degree, some nice rims, dark window tint and a good stereo system it was a different story! It turned out to be a great car for him. No pavement burner ever LOL, but a popular car to haul friends & band equipment around in & the girls never complained either!
