Hey guys I just ordered this kit! Needless to say I'm ecstatic about getting into detailing.

http://www.chemicalguys.com/Porter_Cable_7424XP_Foam_Pad_Kit_Car_Buffer_p/buf_209.htm

I was wonder was wondering what would be the best combo for a black car with heavy swirls and fine scratches. I want to start on my brothers black 08 SS cobalt. It needs some loving BAD.

What process/ polished would you use to complete a job like this?

Go read some stuff at autopia.org

I really like meguiares M105 and m205 now and find that its a simple way to get great results.

wash, clay bar, go to town with m105, go to town with m205, wax/ sealant

just follow the step method. and this chart can help. http://www.mothers.com/02_products/ProLineFlyer.pdf

I agree with Justin above also, clay bar first. i use mother's products but it is up to you on the brand. i would just use one that provides a range of products and not an "all in one" solution. Good Luck!

Ive also noticed that autozone and pep boys started selling meguiries professional line, m105 and m205 in some stores!

Theresa million polishes out there....your just gonna need a decent cutting polish and I would recommend a finishing polish for that black car as well.

Nice kit man, congrads on getting into the game.

Justin is right, there's a ton of polishes out there.
Aside From M105/205, i have seen better results with products from sites like obseessive and CG over the parts store variety.

I'd recommend you check out Obsessive Detail: SN95 members get a discount from his site:

Polish:http://www.obsessivedetail.com/polishesandswirlremovers.html
Wax:http://www.obsessivedetail.com/Deep-Reflections-Wax.html

Justin (with obsessive) is also great with questions, if you want to PM or call him.

you can also check out the optical line at CG:

For black paint, your basically looking at polishing it 2x as much, and it will shine 2x better than other colors.

For the process, I'd recommend Polishing it until your satisfied.
Seal it up with Jetseal
then final with a good wax.

Since you have some Helix pads, here's a pad application chart I made up for my own reference:
Enjoy :)

There are a rediculous amount of products out there for detailing. As mentioned before, meguiars 105 and 205 does a good job, but some people complain about it dusting and having a short working time. Menzerna make good product, but they're usually a little more expensive. CG optical line also does well. It kind of depends on what type of paint you're working on. I've found on my mustang that the clear is rather soft, so I can get away with a couple pads and 205 most the time/ finishing polish.

Little extra, this is my favorite bookmark if you're curious:

M105, M205 and a wax sealant of your choice. Also try menzerna and some blackfire products are stellar. Theres a lot of different approaches to detailing, just find something that fits your budget and gets the results you want.

Head over to autogeek.net and check our their forum. You can learn alot from there.

Yea, exactly...I just always reccomend m105 and m205 because its a great product, very easy to use, and very simple to get the results you want.

the m105 and m205 is also very good with the porter cable as the polish does not break down so it seems to actually work better

Its the porter cable xp aka orbital, 6800 rpms...they are awesome units and very safe because its orbital, not rotary.

Perfect for beginners.

I love my pc, it just works. I love the flex 3401 but its pricey and the PC does just as good IMO. Im about to move up to a makita rotary and start practicing with it, better results in half the time with a rotary.

Dont believe the hype

I have a makita rotary and a pc74....it really depends on the paint but I truly find that the pc is fine for 99% of cars.

I ALWAYS go over the car with a the pc74 after a rotary to get rid of any buffer trail or swirls the rotary may leave behind as well.

Do you have to use a porter cable? I don't really feel like spending $300 on one.

Are the cheaper polishers garbage? Like this one?

You did good. Menzerna polishes are the best imo. Autopia is another good resource. Don't worry about rotarys half the people that own them don't know how to use them right. Yeah you can correct defects quicker you can also eat through your clear.
