well I was down at the sunoco... and I saw a guy there I went to school with. We started bullshittin... and my car came up and my planes for it.

I mentioned I was planning on gettin some gt40 iron heads to drop on a 302...

He goes, no, get gt40x heads.

I'm like... no, you mean gt40p...

he says, no... I mean... gt40X

So evidently, these were used on the saleen exploders. Please, enlighten me on these things. Are they difficult to find? Spensive? How do they perform? etc

Thanks in advance... paul... lol

The GT40X is an aluminum 1.94 valve version of the GT40 series head. It has bigger runners but the same valve size as the P's. I got them on my FRPP crate motor. They are good heads. But there is better out there. The GT40P's were only used on the Explorers as far as I know. The other thing about the X's is that they have the standard exhaust port config as the rest of the Windsor family. UNLIKE the P's.

As far as them being used on the Saleen Explorers? Dont know. Could have.

you can find GT40p's on ebay all day long selling for about $300-$350 rebuilt.

I just sold my 93 Cobra GT40's today for $480 shipped with roller rockers.

If i were you i would get the X's. if your paying the price for aluminum heads, hold out for a pair of used goos heads. I got my trick flow track heat heads for $550. Spent $53 in machine work, $125 for used trick flow 1.6 RR's, and $106 for a complete head swap o-ring gasket set. thats $834 for damn goos heads complete with studs, guide plates and everything. check corral and craigslist for deals

I assume your on a budget so I'd say get gt40's cheap and have them ported and polished then buy a custom cam. I'm always leery about thumper since they're still e7's. BUt I've known guys who run them and like them

how much do they generally go for used? where did you get yours?

I'm actually considering just going with the Thumper kit for 900bucks... http://www.hunterstyle.com/thumper/combos.php

Don't do it. Just find a set of aluminum heads used, or spend a few hundred more and buy new ones. E7 heads are not worth the money you're spending on them.

I would not invest in a set of *new* GT40X heads.

If you found them for a good price used, absolutely. If your gonna invest in an aluminum head for a stock small block (meaning original from Ford - no rebuild.) I would wait for a set of AFR 165's or a set of Trick Flows.

GT40X heads are good heads and you can go fast with them. You can go fast - easier with AFR/TFS.

There are guys going 10's with GT40X heads...

Another consideration when thinking about porting iron heads, few builders will even bother with cast iron now days and if they do, you're going to pay for it... Save some duckets, shop around, and get yourself a NICE set of aluminum heads.

Heres the thing, whatever I get, I am not gonna port them. I don't wanna pay for it...

My plan, get something better the stock for cheap, get a nice cam and all that good stuff, then gut the car, lighten it up with a fiberglass hood, race seats, etc... and just try to get it into the low 13s, maybe high 12s... Then I'll be happy...

If that's all you'd like to do - slap a blower on it and call it a day.

Nah... too spensive, too much stress on the motor, no traction...

I'll do some suspension work, maybe a k member if i can find one cheap, some cheap heads for a few hundred, nice cam and carb, maybe a lower end out of a 87-92 GT....

They made about 230-315 stock. So for less then a grand, I think it could make near 300...

ok... how about this question... I have a grand... I want 300hp... best route to take is?

Blowers are cheaper than HCI.

If you're talking 300 rwhp, I think you'd have a REALLY difficult time getting there for $1K. If you want to make that much power for that price, nitrous is the only solution.

Paul.

For what it's worth, I have 64cc GT40X heads, an E303 cam, and an Edelbrock Performer intake on a stock shortblock with all the other bolt ons and made right around 275rwhp on the first dyno pull. Car weighs around 3400lbs. and will trap 104mph on chrome 03 cobras and should trap around 105-106 on my drag wheels which is good for high 12's with traction or low 13's with street tires. Only reason I can't give you an accurated E.T. yet is because I've only had the car at the track once for one run and it was my first time and I spun terribly to a 2.2 60 ft. and a [email protected] E.T. :nonono:.....Embarrassing, I know

Yeah... my car only weighs... like 2900lbs... lol... in stock form... So, I don't really need to go overboard on the motor. I'm mainly gonna focus on the weight and suspension. No point in all that power if it doesn't go to the wheels.

I have some light eagle alloys, get a fiberglass hood, gut the interior and make some interior panels out of thin wood and wrap it with leather. Make it look nice, but lose all the crap i don't need. K member, AC delete, etc.
