Had MAF cleaned, it was nasty!!

I don't even know how to get this said. Most of the time I drive my car, it seems to be bogged down. The idle kinda revs up & the power go doesn't match the sound. If I get off the gas so it gets to a normal idle, it then drives fine. It does this when 1st driving for the day or just passing someone on the highway. I hope this makes sense! It is just because I have a 15 year old car? Been doing this for a long time, just finally asked. Maybe y'all know a better way to say this? Thanks!!

That sound funky. Im sure its not just because the age of the car. But maybe you could get a video posted? Might help explain it a little better.

When was the last time you cleaned your mass air flow sensor.Try cleaning with a can of MAF sensor cleaner from your auto parts store.$5.00.Be carefull taking it apart

sorry, i've been making a lot of typos lately. im used to a lap top and now im using a desktop computer. i ment to type idle.

from my experiance with a dirty maf it caused my car to feel slugish, it would also cutout past 4k rpms and wouldnt rev like it should.

does your car feel like its under load most the time?

It hasn't been cleaned. All I know for sure is I bought a re-salvaged one on 7/31/06.

I really don't drive mine that much now. Even less over say 30 MPH. Today I went 44 miles. I came on a car I needed to pass, took for-ever!! My car was very sluggish. I totally forgot about that MAF cleaning stuff. That was my 1st stop when I got back to town!! I'm having it & my K&N filter cleaned tomorrow. I washed my motor off because it just needed it.

Oh yeah, while gone I filled up with gas. I had 121.9 miles on my trip. Forgot how much gas I got, but got like 12 MPG. Yes I had a lot of town driving, that sucked though. Is it maybe because the stuff is dirty? I think that's part of it. Thanks!!

Think i would start again at the beginning, check the timing, clean the maf, check the air filters not clogged up, and just go through it all.
I do'nt hang about while driving, and 12 mpg at any speed would be very worrying at current pump prices.

It was just dirty! He cleaned mt K&N, MAF, & replaced my fuel filter. Running like it's supposed to now! My car's it not fast, but not as slow as it was. I thought that was the cause. Thanks!!

You paid someone to clean it? or did a buddy do it or something?
You just need to remove the whole housing and you can spray the cleaner right onto the sensor. takes 5 minutes.

Know I've been away from this site for a long time. Think y'all have forgotten how not mechanically inclined I am. I am not smart enough to put both new wipers on my car. If I get the 1st on, I totally forget how I did it. My mechanic knows this about me, so doesn't charge as much as his other customers. What's simple to you normal brained guys is not for me. Thanks though.

My suggestion would be to go back to a paper filter or one of the other types that do not use oil.

He's 100% right. I kept getting dirty MAFs with my K&N, switched to stock paper and it ran better. K&N filters are overrated by far, Kinda hypocritical now that I have a CAI with a K&N style filter, but if you ever have to re-oil them, You have to be VERY sparse with how much you put on them.

K&N filters have been proven to give gains. As mentioned, you just can't go overboard with the oil. And give the oil plenty of time to soak in before reinstalling the filter and firing up the car.

Not calling you a liar, but the dirt came from the dirt & crap I drive over to get to my carport. Plus I live in just as dirty town. Still have dirt roads so it's just always in the air. My mechanic knows how to oil it. He doesn't put a lot on it. & BlkoutGT , thanks!!

I believe you are missing the point. All the air travels through the filter first. Some of the oil on the filter will always come off as the air travels through especially at higher speeds. Living in a dusty area just means that you have to clean/change the filter more often than others in a more dust free environment. Same principle applies to changing engine oil.
