This is for anyone who is considering doing a T-56 swap in their 94-95, here is a chart to show you the differences in the Cobra T-56 vs the Viper T-56 and what you will need to swap out your T-5 to the Monster T-56.

TORQUE RANGE DRY WEIGHT SPLINE DATA GEAR RATIO CHART
MODEL (lb. ft.) lbs. Input Output 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th 6th Rev
COBRA
1386-000-012 400 lb. ft. 115-129 lbs. 10T 31T 2.97 2.07 1.43 1.00 .80 .62 3.28

VIPER
1386-000-018 450 lb. ft. 115-129 lbs. 26T 30T 2.66 1.78 1.30 1.00 .74 .50 2.90

COBRA overall length [in MM] 840.0
VIPER overall length [in MM] 818.7

COBRA bellhousing length [in MM] 135.0
VIPER bellhousing length [in MM] 129.0

Ford racing aluminum driveshaft shortened by machine shop up to 2 inches, depending on cobra/viper spec

Stock clutch

Stock shift fork, T-5

Aftermarket Xmember moved backwards 1.5 inches
They say you can use your stock Xmember but i couldnt get it to work. AMP Performance/DD/Summit all sells adjustable xmembers for this swap for under 150 bucks.

New Bellhousing for 5.0/5.8.

Reverse lockout harness wired into your brake light relay

the stock shifter on the T-56 is pretty short, however you can get a pro 5.0 or a Tri-Ax as well and they are nice. i have the Tri-Ax and i love it.

that is basically it, the viper spec trannies are more expensive, due to them supposedly being able to handle more Tourqe, but there are many guys out there who are running 500+ hp mustangs with T-56's

The warranty from Tremec is decent, they give you a 180 day warranty from the day of intall/purchase that replaces anything. From my understanding is you take it to a mechanic, preferably a ford dealership and they service/diagnose then send the bill directly to Tremec. Not a bad deal eh?

Overall this is a great swap, and the DIYer can do it in a weekend with some help from a friend.

Feel free to add anything that i have missed :happydrunks:

You can get complete swap kits including all the above parts from DD performance, AMP performance and TTC automotive, which is the easiest way to go. Unless you find that awesome craigslist deal on a tranny and want to get everything seperate.

Great post. I went with the Viper spec and love it. 3.27s and 6th at 75mph is around 1700rpm, just coasting down the highway.

Things I found doing my install:
The bracket kit for the crossmember mounts from D&D do not coincide with subframe connectors
The kit I got did not come with reverse lockout harness........no big deal I pulled the solenoid and inserted a freeze plug...problem solved.
Quicktime bellhousing is an extremely nice piece of work.
Make sure to get the extended fork, mine had to be for the twin disc Zoom clutch, several overnight part deliveries fixed that mistake.
Check the clutch fork pivot ball stud, if using an other than factory diaphragm clutch it may not be the right length. Lakewood adjustable = problem solved.

I had a new crossmember built that gave more exhaust clearance and put the mount in the right spot for proper drive line angle.

The original kit from D&D used the factory crossmember but had new tab brakets that it bolted to. How did yours come?

D&D says the trans are rated 500tq for the normal T56 and 650tq for the Viper trans, either way I'd think it has to be more than 450.

yeah you wont hurt it, i had a tech tell me from Tremec that if you dont use it for all out 700+ hp tq etc this tranny is pretty tough. I had some gear rollover noise cause i used the dexron III it recomends :puke: he told me to use synchromesh and cleared it right up. I told him my setup and hes like yeah you aint gonna hurt it lol i was kinda hoping that this thread could maybe be a sticky for furture reference and people can add to it whenever they have more info whatnot :happydrunks:

Why does everyone go through all this work instead of buying a TKO 500 or 600?

A TKO 600 will take everything a T56 can, easily.

Because then they cant say they have a six speed. :boxing: When the time comes to replace my tranny, I plan on getting what ever I can find the best deal on. Dont get me wrong a T56 is BA but if theres a 600 for less money I wouldnt hesitate. Doesnt the 6th gear offer a little better highway cruising speed/rpm that the tko?

Sh1t, my buddy just bought a TKO 600 with 1500 miles on it.

Came with the 600, Lakewood Bell, Pro 5.0 Shifter, used Fidanza flywheel, used spec clutch (which he threw away), and yoke.

He paid $1600 plus shipping for everything.

Why cant I find a deal like that. Thats a steal, plus for some reason it seems like the new cool things to do is switch to a C4.

I can't speak for everyone but having that extra gear between my 4th and 5th gears would really help me out, right now its like either 4th gear is too low or 5th gear is too high for like 80% of my driving, it's a pain in the ass with traffic constantly slowing down and crap.
