With my timing set at stock the car runs hot and pings. I have lowered the timing to about 4degrees and it is ok. I would like to bring the timing back to stock. Any ideas. My fuel pump is also kinda loud and it changes in pitch when i hit the brakes or put the turn signals on.

have you checked what condition your harmonic balancer if its a little spun or has a wobble to it when you go and set the timing it could really throw you off the actual number....

Many 94-95 5.0s ping at 10 degrees initial timing - which is the factory setting. Try premium fuel if you haven't already. Colder plugs. Back the timing off to 8*. etc...

i'd bet money that the balencer is spun.

find TDC and then see what the balencer says.

+1. Almost guaranteed that the HB has spun. If you can see any signs of rubber coming from between the hub and core or it has a slight wobble it is toast. Is the mileage above 70k?

Hell, I run 14 degrees. Ran 87 in it the other day with no problems (by accident).

two questions:

1. do you have the stock mid pipe on the car? if not, does the aftermarket one have cats or not?
2. do you have a cold air intake, stock intake box, or is the air filter in the engine bay attached to the mass air sensor (KNN style)?

I just resolved this same problem on my 95 gt.

I replaced everything, new balancer, fuel filter, plugs wires, cap rotor, seafoamed it, cleaned maf, etc etc. Nothing fixed it except for bringing the timing down do like 7*.

I pulled off the tb to clean it up, and what do you know, there was no gasket between the tb and the intake. And its not like the gasket was old and fell apart, both the tb and the intake were nice new shiny metal, like no gasket had EVER been there. This car has been in my family since new, and as far back as I can remember it's had a pinging issue. Not sure if the assembly plant missed the gasket when it was built or maybe the tb was removed and the gasket was forgotten...who knows.

I made a gasket, copper sprayed the crap out of it and bolted the tb back on. Took it for a drive and my pining was gone.

Copper and aluminum dont mix....Remove it again and use anything but copper on it. These two metals are HIGLY incompatable and will cause the aluminum to deteriorate

when you set your timing did you make sure the hold down screw for the distributor is in there tight and not letting it spin freely??
