also, when I'm setting the timing, is there anything I need to unplug or disconnect?

Unplug the spout connector. Mine runs well at 10 degrees, but you have to set it differently depending on what you've done to it thus far.

If you look at the wires that go into your MAF there is a white connector. Mine is pretty off white because of age, but just pull that out, and you're set. That is what allows the computer to screw with your timing, so you have to take that out while you try to change it.

If you don't remove the spout connector, then you are adjusting the base timing blindly.

I did not remove the spout and set the mark on the crank and 16*. Seems to be fine, with many mods.....

then you didn't actually set your base timing because the computer would have been making corrections as well. This is why the spout connector has to be removed.

Check out a shop manual it should have a picture of the spout connector. Or better yet, I'll find a picture of it for you and edit my post.

so without a timing light, what would be the correct steps to setting the timing? Also, at this point is my timing advanced or retarded, if I have set the timing without the spout being removed? thanks.....(sorry bout jacking your thread)

hey man, when you had originally adjusted your timing with the spout in, did you have any backfiring or acceleration issues?

YES it is definitely worth it. I checked mine the other day, and it was at 10* ATDC, which is 20* from where it should be. After I set it to 10* it runs much, much better and it has gotten rid of a lot of the bogging during acceleration. Definitely freed up a few ponies in the process.

----Anyone who wants to mess with their timing GO HERE!!!----

this is a great explenation of how to adjust your timing with pictures.

oh and a tip for anyone who has never messed with this stuff before... you barely need to turn the dizzy (distributer) to adjust the timing. Don't expect to turn the thing a 1/4 turn or anything like that. It's going to be more like 1/16 of a turn if not less.
