Normal air to air intercoolers cool the charge afterwards too.

At any rate, unless you are pushing the envelope, you don't need any type of cooler. Stock compression and 10-12 PSI is just fine. I drove all over the damn desert and up and down the Rockies with 10 psi on crappier California oxygenated fuel and never once pinged or knocked, without an intercooler, and with ambient temps sometimes pushing 120 degrees. Also, that was at 10.5:1 compression. You don't need the aftercooler, or any intercooler. People blather on about safety and crap, but in reality, most of them are sold to people who think they look cool.

Vortechs aftercooler takes up a bunch of space, makes the install an hour or so longer, nearly doubles the price of the kit, and doesn't do anything for a street guy. So if the benefits of a little peace of mind and a cool look out weigh the cons, then there you go.

Intercooler = lower intake temps = more power correct? I understand the price not justifying the benefits but it's not like the intercoolers are worthless. :dunno:

No, intercooler's are not worthless. But, in my case for instance, I was easily able to acheive my goals (and more), without pushing the tune or boundaries at all. I could have probably gotten another 30-40 out of my tune and still been safe.

Where intercooling becomes more of a must is when you rely heavily on the blower. If you want to get 500 rwhp with stock head's and off the shelf cams, you totally can, but you'll have to push 12-14 psi through it and be more aggressive with the tune, in that case the intercooler becomes exponentially more effective.

If you approach it as a system, you can hit a pretty high mark without actually pushing one area as far.

What about heat exchangers? They serve the same purpose as an intercooler right but just have the fluid do the cooling instead of air right? Why do the 03 cobras come with them and not intercoolers?

Cobras have come with them because they are a roots style blower.

the cooler cools the fluid going into the water to air intercooler that is under the blower....

A heat exchanger, and Vortechs aftercooler, are basically heater cores with their own pump and fluid reservoir. I bet you could make your own pretty easily.

To elaborate a bit, Cobra's use both, and the heat exchanger under the intake helps both with cooling the intake charge, and carrying off the heat soak you get from mounting the blower on the manifold.

I've seen some 03 cobras with a front mount. Is this just an intercooler if they are turbo?

It comes from the factory with a Front mount intercooler, this is where the water that runs through the heat exchanger get's cooled. Alot of people upgrade them. It's not really an intercooler, just a radiator for the heat exchanger.

Oh I see. So it's just a secondary radiator specifically for the heat exchanger. Where does the water that comes from the heat exchanger and goes to its radiator come out of the intake or whatever underneath the blower?

I never really tore into mine, but it looked like they came out from the intake valley.

The standard P1 is comparable to the Vortech S-trim.

Nothing really compares to the Novi, it's honestly just as happy and efficient at 8 psi as it is at 25.

Yeah but NOVIs are EXPENSIVE I thought?
I like Prochargers over Vortech... No real reason, just prefered I guess. What about NOVIs? How are they that much better?

Yeah, Novi's are expensive, that's part of how they are that much better. They have a superior impeller design, the compressor map shows a broader range of efficiency.

Alot of people like the Procharger's because they are scared to tap into the oil pan and they usually come with nifty looking intercoolers. Alot of people wind up with Vortech's because they are cheap and proven.

Yeah... well a S/C is far outta my grasp. There is a lot more stuff before I get to that point haha. Just wondering I guess. I've just always like Prochargers.

Well one of our forum member's here has developed a very promising kit around the Rotrex head unit. Pretty resonably priced too, something to think about when you get that far.

yea it looks good but the problem is that i've been hearing about it for like a year or two now and haven't seen any results or anything from it... and they don't have a 4v kit yet either so thats probably another 4 years.

You don't have a 4v, lol. As far as I know, 96-98 kit's are available right now for shipment.
