I would recommend those shims for the carrier itself. Yukon ford 8.8 super shim kit. At least for the carrier. The pinion shims any brand will do. The ford racing shims suck. These get sandwiched so you hammer the whole stack in together. Makes that aspect of it easier.

Also I would think carefully about how far you plan To go if you add a blower. If you are at 9 lbs and have 4:30 gears you will be blowing the tires off left and right. In which case a drag radial would be recommended.

Well, I ordered this set of shims and stuff from Yukon (https://lmr.com/item/LRS-4210A/Mustang-88-Rear-Gear-Super-Install-Kit) Maybe a little overkill, but I think it should be fine!

Okay, thank you for the tip, I'll see how I feel after the gear install. Who knows, maybe I'll end up just building the engine and keeping it NA! I'll progress slowly, and figure it out as I go

That's a good kit. Just think about what you want out of the car now and what you want out of it long term. I went through a lot of different rear end gear ratios in the green car. 4 different ones as my setup changed and goals changed.

About shims....

Ask the shop doing the install if they use solid shims for the diff/carrier/whatever they call it. Because the shim packs are good in my opinion for mockup. But once you put miles on it (and it doesn't take long) those things will go south. A real gear shop will have solid shims perfectly sized for your application once they know the correct tolerances after mockup. If they don't, well it's not a total show stopper and you can still run it. It's just not ideal.

Even with 3.55’s with a blower you’re not getting any traction ona regular street tire .

I run all seasons, naturally aspirated and have to pretend there's an egg under my foot in 1st with 3.08's .

For sure these cars have traction problems stock . Let alone with added power and steeper gear probably why they’re so fun

Yea my cars the same way when I’m on street tires
I was referring to nittto 555R vs ET streets lol one will last but he will probably light them up. The other doesn't last long at all

The MT ET streets have better grip but they dont balance well. I went with the 555R2 this time around and I'm happy.

3.55 in a 4V Cobra is absolutely pointless. The stock gear is 3.27. Maybe you're thinking a 94-95 Cobra, which would make more sense.
My 98 Cobra with a turbo has 3.55 and I wish I went with 3.73
I rocked 4.30s for 15 years+. It's an incredible gear for the 96-98 4V. Keeps you in the sweet spot in the upper RPMs when you want to be, or you can shift up another gear and drop the RPMs down low.
Around town you can cruise in 4th, rather than 3rd gear and do it a lower RPM too.
To go through the effort to go from a 3.27 to a 3.55 is pointless unless you really want 3.55s. I was just saying how I like 3.55s max under any circumstances under the basis of maintaining a drivable car where I don’t have to make a ton of noise and rpm everywhere I go. At night, perhaps when you are a little sleepy and just want a nice drive, I don’t want to have to wind the thing to 3k just to keep up with traffic, you know?

The Mach 1’s seem to have plenty of oomph with 3.55s. Then again I like my gears a little longer than most.

Again though, the Mach 1 is not a 96-98 4V.
3000RPMs to keep up with traffic? Not sure I'm following you.
3.55 is your max gear you would ever use? You're missing out, unless you plan on driving a pushrod 5.0 for the rest of your life.

Even with a pushrod 3.55’s are tame .

Noticed that too when I had ET streets on my green car. Now it has r888. Much happier now, the grip is close to the ET streets but they corner farrrrrr better.
