98 Mustang GT. 80k miles. Blown motor..

mustang3613.jpg

Alright, some of you know about my 1998 Pacific Green mustang gt. bought it with a nice size hole in the block. car has 80k on it and the guy claims he was going 140 on the autobahn and threw a rod. BS or not, it needed a motor and a 5.4 sohc was coming soon, possibly with a lightning s/c setup on top of it. That idea didn't work out though. We got the motor in the car and started checking prices on intakes and other things, making exhaust work, etc, etc. So the 5.4 was sold to some guy who wanted one for his f150 after we decided that it wasn't really worth it to mod or buy everything that needed to clear tight spots, exhaust and close under the hood. my mustang was motor less, just like it had been for the majority of its life it seemed like. Then we found the 96 cobra motor in South Carolina that a guy had...

Went after the motor asap. looked good so we picked it up. 60k miles on it.

Then came the gathering of parts. this swap did not happen overnight, but its getting done. picked up the computer, hoses, wiring harness for motor, and other things before it went in the car.

One day me and my dad were at a friend of ours salvage yard and he was telling us about a white 98 Mustang GT that had "some kind of 6 speed in it." We were definitely interested in it, but just assumed he was going to want about 2k for it complete or something. We get to his house and he has a centerforce clutch to go with it. So after talking to him for about 20 min, he told us we could get it for 700 with everything that was with it.
Picked that up instantly. now had a t56 to go behind the cobra motor. :la:

Later Found a deal on some Real Ford y2k's in chrome. newer rear tires and they're ready to go on.

The motor and tranny are in the car right now, fairly easy to set in. the tranny cross member is a pain to mess with since it doesn't work on t56's. its getting cut at the original mounting spot and having a plate put in with mounting holes further back than stock.
Had the cobra motor running on fuel for the first time on saturday and it was even on the stock gt computer.

car will get cobra bumpers sometime in the next week or so, brakes either at the same time or later on down the road. debating on cutting springs on it, but im not too sure yet. interior is currently gray and black, but will most likely get changed out with 97 cobra black interior. Much more to come!!

10/23/09 update

Got the tranny crossmember back yesterday. Everything is close, but it mounts up good. i'll get some pictures up tonight.
all the exhaust is on Mac catback, mac o/r H pipe, (H pipe played hell with us putting it over the starter on the t56).

also have a cobra front and rear bumper to go on it and i'm going to pick up a cobra hood tomorrow.

one other thing, i'm debating on paint options for the car. so any help or cool colors you know of, link them or post them up. any color goes, it doesn't have to be a similar green. some colors i am thinkin about are Deep violet, BAB, bright tangerine, and i really like dfg. Post up colors!!

one vote for tangerine, that one guy has a beautiful one on this board. I am going to keep my eye on that one, if I have the money if it ever comes up for sale, it is mine!

Great project! Looking forward to the end result.

Have you run into any problems besides the cross member?
People say that the 98 cars are like a whole different breed from the 96-97 cars, but we had it running and all on the 98 GT computer and the GT under dash harness. just changed out the under hood harness. although it is a 96 cobra motor and we have a 97 cobra car with complete interior. might just end up swapping interior.

update for 10/31/09

today we fitted the exhaust to the car, and hung it up/tightened it down. before it was just hanging by bolts and a couple hangers. Full mac system minus headers.
Also took some old stock springs i had and cut one round off of each spring. Gave the car a real nice stance, and also put the chrome y2k's on the car.

The motor got the cooling system put in (all new hoses and a good flush and refill). hooked up heater hoses.
Power steering pulley was being a pain because the pulley was bent. changed out the whole power steering pulley/pump mechanism for another one.

all that really lacks to get it on the street is the tranny wiring harness needs to be ran down behind the motor and then figure out why the fans aren't kicking in.
anybody ever had this problem before? might be a fuse, something not hooked up, but i have a feeling something just isn't lining up since the motors have been swapped.

not much longer until this one is in the streets. (sorry for no pics, phone tried to die on me all day long)
