Question about forging

I was just curious as to why you see so many guys spending approximately $3000 on a forged shortblock, when you could get a forged crank, forged rods, and forged pistons for half the price and be able to run the same amount of power safely?

Not everyone wants to install pistons, rods, bearings, and cranks into the block themselves. Ask those people if they can install an oil ring in a piston, if they say no...thats part of the reason why.

Alot of that $3000 cost is Machine shop and labor cost...most don't have the tools or know how to assemle a shortblock so shelling out the 3K isn't a bad deal.

Ya, it reality whether or not you want to put it together or even do they have the knowledge to assemble one and the tools. Honestly the average tool guy doesn't have all the tools, knowledge and time to rebuild if not done correctly. Thats why they just spend the extra bit and go with it that way. If you think about its not too much than doing it yourself. I Supplied my teksid block and cast crank and then for $1600 I got forged rods and pistons, all machine work and an assembled shortblock from a guy here in Houston. So if I was to of supplied the block and crank it would have cost me around another $4-500 depending on which way I went. So lets say around $800 more is all it would of cost and I would of probably a forged crank (which I didn't want) and a much better guarantee that the motor would run good and have no issues with the shortblock. Its worth it in my opinions if you doing your own motor buildup and have never done a build before on a shortblock. Thats all IMO.
