yesterday my oil gauge line exploded and I lost all my oil..I get it towed home, replace the cheap fitting that broke with a better cooper one, refill with oul, used brake cleaner/engine cleaner to clean the oil out of the engine bay, and some dawn on the paint to remove the oil...only now, this morning i get in and after about 5 minutes of driving my (I hadnt noticed my speedo as I rarely pay attention to speed in my hood...) my "O/D off" light came on.. and started flashing. also, the ***** in front of me hit her brakes pretty hard (most likely texting..) so I hit mine, and it felt like my car wasnt braking as much as usual, so I hit the brakes a little harder, my brakes then lock up and I slide. (that happened twice today)

symptoms
-O.D off light flashing
-no speedometer
- possibly no ABS?

I tried googling the symptoms, but everything I get is on the 96-99 f-series trucks..and for them its "f17" I assume thats fuse 17. fuse 17 on a mustang is a blank spot..

any ideas?

Auto?

What gears?

Did you ever change the speedo gear in the trans?

My o/d light would flash when my speedo gear would strip out causing the speedometer to stop working.

I would check that speedo gear/ connection on the side of the trans.

If you hosed down the engine compt to get all the oil off of everything then you might have blown a fuse.
Have you pulled codes?

I checked ALL the fuses and found non blown.

stock auto, and stock gears. I looked around my tranny and cannot find this "speed sensor" everybody talks about. wmburns (you have to know who this guy is) said I may have gotten water in the connection for the plugs and it may be shorting it out. (thats why I looked for the sensor)

ok, well my gauge started working today..no issues. after about 15 miles the gauge starts dropping and jumping back up, the od light starts flashing then it just dropped down to zero.

wmburns believes water got in the connector so I have been letting my car sun bathe to hopefully to dry out everything.

also worth stating, I let the computer reset the other night. if it doesnt work tomorrow, i will reset the computer and see if it works, possibly narrow down a factor..

the vehicle speed sensor is located on the tail section of the tranny (at least on the T5, T45, and T56. I am uncertain on autos.) Simply remove it, spray in electrical connector cleaner in both the male (harness) and female (tranny) sides of the connection. Let it air dry for 10 minutes. Then re-attach it. Some also suggest putting a small dab of die-electric greese in there to avoid h2o build up and corrosion.

Justin seems to be the man on this one... I have no ABS, no automatic, and no O/D, and i have no idea if my speedo works either. lol. but i figured id chime in and offer my .02 on the VSS, since it was mentioned.

hm. check your vacuum boost lines (firewall down to your steering rack) they use nylon seals that can go bad. If you need some, I can put a few in an envelope and mail them to you.

other than that, clean your effing breaks, or buy my BNIB brake pads i have for $25.00 and replace the pads on all 4 tires. ;-)

does your ABS light turn on? is the ABS junction box (assuming you have one? i dont know. mine didnt have ABS) have any leaks on it?

I dont have any leaks, and no abs light. I think its just time to do a fluid change. I will check those vaccum lines tomorrow. I hate the feeling of my wheel.

also, since youll be under there check your steering shaft. It has a rubber knuckle that can break-down over time. easy check, since youre there anyways. :)

Changing the PS fluid is a cake walk, just remember to replace it with ATF, not PS fluid. (if your motor is indeed the 02 PI motor in your sig.)

I replaced all my ps fluid with ATF when the high pressure line blew a couple weeks ago.

gauge seems to be working today, I'll test it tomorrow when i go drive.

where da fuq is the VSS? I have an auto an a UPR X, I hant really get to anything near my tranny....

Its on the side / top of the tail shaft driver side of trans sticking out. One bolt holds it in

????

Jack the car up and crawl under on your back.

Its not that hard to find....on the driver side there is a sensor for the gear position then back a bit farther on the tail shift, probably somewhat on the top side of it there will be wires running to a sensor with one small bolt holding it in.

Undo the one small bolt and pull the whole thing out. Make sure the gear isnt chewed up or anything.

No idea what else to tell you because its blatantly obvious if you jack the car up and get under there.....theres nothing else connected to the trans in that area.

See the tailshaft....the black thing about 6 inches from the back of the trans where the driveshaft goes in is the VSS
