Nice one. How does it fit? I bought a passenger side cup from CJ (repro) because the stock had broken tabs. It looks nice, but the front part (towards the dash) does move a bit when pulling the door, although all the tabs are in their place. I don't know what I could do about it.

Quick Question: What adhesive did you use to set the door handle cup?

Last night I took the intake manifold back off my 302.. not real thrilled about that.

I put everything back together last week to prepare for first start & filled the coolant reservoir with water (just deionized, no antifreeze for now) and noticed the level very slowly going down, about an inch every day. What's weird about that is all the spark plugs are still out and when I cranked the engine over with a wrench on the crank bolt, nothing came out of any cylinder. I don't have a bore camera but there's been at least 2 cups of water unaccounted for (it seems) so if it was leaking past the head gasket into a cylinder that would have come out when the piston came to TDC.

I had not yet drained the oil so I did that - a little water came out first from the bottom but that was expected since a little water always drops into the lifter valley when you remove the intake manifold at first disassembly. Not a lot of water. So after draining the oil I left the plugs out with solo cups under them and refilled the coolant system to the top (below the overflow tube) and waited a day. Again it went down, but it appears only residual oil had dripped out of the open drain holes. No layer of water at the bottom of the solo cups and it was definitely oil in the cups not just dirty water.

So water's going somewhere, I don't live in a climate where an inch of water just evaporates, it's not going into the cylinders and it's apparently not going into the crankcase and I didn't see any drips or wetness on the floor or engine. Engine exterior is clean (not jacketed in oil and grime) so if there was significant water leaking somewhere it would be visible unless it was real sneaky water.

For lack of a better plan I figured the intake was going to have to come back off so I drained the water and did that. Nothing obvious there either, no pools of water in the lifter valley apart from maybe a little splash from removing the manifold since you can never 100% clear out the crossover channels.

I'm going to have to think about this for a minute... I'm already in another ~$40 for new gaskets, don't want to reassemble it for nothing.

Good news is I seem to have fixed the leak, apparently i just didn't get a good seal or maybe the gasket shifted while I was installing it before. New gaskets are on and it's good.

Bad news, while pressing a steel gear onto my expensive new distributor I heard a crunch.. that is not encouraging. I guess I have to wait till tuesday before even contacting Holley and then who knows how expensive this is going to be to fix. Not to mention watching summer slip by.

If I still did much drinking I'd probably do that tonight but instead I'll just mow the lawn or something stupid like that.

Finally got around to swapping the new dash into the 01 since after I swapped the fuse box, it would crank but wouldn’t start. Might as well swap everything over. I got the dash in and started plugging the connectors in when I found one doesn’t fit. All the other connectors are the same but one isn’t and it has a different number of pins so I’ll have to do some research. One step forward, two steps back.

And what is that next to the gas pedal in the last pic?

It wouldn’t surprise me, someone really did a number on this poor car. The wires for the brake light switch were cut and had wire nuts holding them together and the clutch switch is jumped with a fuse for some reason. That’s just the tip of the iceberg.

Well, it's actually common for the brake light switch wiring to get chafed against the armature in a SN95's manual pedal box. Happened to my car many years ago and I had to relocate that branch of the harness slightly and overtape it. I kept wondering why my brake light fuse kept popping one night, I'd press the brake pedal and saw no red light behind me.

I was going to buy it looks like it’s at least newer. I’m not going to tinker with it and screw something else up lol.

I’m sure you’re right, though it was cut. And when I put the new fuse box in the brake lights were stuck on even with the fuse out and the sensor unplugged. That was the point I threw in the towel and decided to just go ahead and swap the dash, which I already had.

I was originally going to depin and repin the one connector that isn’t the same but it seems to be molded together so the pins won’t slip out. I cut the connectors and am in the process of splicing them together. I verified the wire colors are the same and the circuits on them are the same as well. With this done, I’m going to plug everything in and mock it up and see if it starts. Fingers crossed.

Whatever you do, make sure you have a new fresh can of smoke, in case you lose some. Hopefully, you won't need to use it. ;) The best part of your thread is the "wire nuts". OMG, I've seen that so many times it makes my skin crawl.

I hate wire nuts. It’s like are you that lazy you can’t even be bothered to use butt connectors. Geez.

In other news, she’s alive! I was letting it run with the dash still partially unbolted as I didn’t want to fully install it until I knew everything was working. While moving the dash around, the wipers would turn on momentarily by themselves lol but it stopped once everything was installed. It also seems the blinkers don’t work and the door chime still isn’t working when opening doors but I’ll take one issue on at a time. I just need to finish installing the dash and I can start installing the rest of the parchment panels.

Doesn't look like a lot has changed since the last photo but here we are:

Still need to complete the wiring (obviously, see left side of photo..) and get the electric power steering pump mounted + plumbed, and the new throttle cable should be here Tuesday hopefully that fits.

After that's all done it should be ready to start really tidying, check for fuel leaks and get the first start-up done.

I noticed that the Speed Doctor alternator bracket and idler doesn't really generate a lot of wrap around the water pump pulley and I also needed somewhere to mount the ignition coil so I cut down the old power steering + A/C bracket to just the idler and coil pad. Drilled and tapped holes for the new ignition coil on top & I'll order a 6 rib pulley to wrap a longer belt around... and a longer belt. The short belt that's on there should be good enough to let me get started anyway I just assume it's gonna have a hard time turning the pump at higher RPM with only ~20% wrap.

(yes I know it is bad practice to leave a tool on the crank bolt, I have removed it before locking up for the night)

I did a quick polish of the car and applied weatherproofing on the convertible top. Then drove with my son to the station to fill up the tank and buy ice creams.

I am afraid to know the answer but too curious to not ask, how much are you guys paying for gas now? I apologize that our "president" caused it, please forgive us....
