why do so many ppl give me a weird look or sarcastic tone of "oh shit, good luck" when i tell them i plan to put on lt headers

are they that big of a hassle? they're still aways in the future (like new years bonus hahaha)

anyone chime in with your experiences

I did it in my 98 when I did my PI engine swap. Took me longer to install the headers then it was to do the entire engine swap. If your gonna install long tubes, the best way is to drop the K member.

LT's are well worth it imo.

some people prefer shorties cause they want the "room" to be able to work on the car. lol

To each their own. :)

I can't say anything about 96-98 cars, but on my '95 I just put my longtubes in by myself without a ton of trouble.

Really? It was opposite for me, haha. My passenger side slid right in, the driver side was a PITA due to the steering shaft.

LTs on the 4.6 are kinda a bitch.. need to pull the tranny, drop k member blah blah..

but.. there is a new bellhousing being put out for the t-45 that allows you to take your lts off without dropping the tranny...

ill post back later

it is a pain in the ass that is well worth the trouble... the easiest way to get go about it is to drop the K-member. make sure you get new header gaskets, new ford OEM ones are better than most aftermarket ones.. you don't want to go through all that work and end up with a leak causing you to have to take it all apart and do it over again.

why would you have to take it all apart to do it over again for a leak? take off the top bolts, slide out the old gaskets, put in the new ones, TQ all bolts down...

anyways, i do most of the stuff on my car, but i plan on LT headers this summer... and they are going to be put in by a shop... i have a MM solid steering shaft, so they may need modified. and i DONT want to try and get them in there from under the car while the car with only 6 inches of clearance...

I'm doing shortys, mainly for the fact I dont wanna change out my brand new x pipe, and I dont want to spend 300 bucks on longtubes..just gonna settle with some bbk shorties when I do the PI swap.

I understand they give a bit more than shorties, but i do most of my own work and i dont fancy having to drop a k member or having to take the long tubes off in order to do clutch work or transwork. It just seems like too much hassle for me but i guess to each his own.

It is a beast on a 4.6 with a stock k member. It can be done but it is a long process even if you are very mechanically inclined. My buddy (professional mechanic) and I did the job in his dad's shop and it was a loooooong process. There is no room and once you get them in, there is no room to tighten the bolts. It can be done, but be patient. Doing it again I would drop the k member and put in a tubular in the process. Would be well worth it.
