Pretty productive weekend. I stripped the hood and trunk, but the big news is I finally got around to pulling the crank out of the short block with my older son tonight. At least I know what the original tapping was. Rod bearings on #1, 4 and 6 were smoked. I can't believe the crank isn't scored. I'm going to throw some main and rod bearings at it, hone the cylinders, clean the block at a local rebuilder and then I'll put it back together. I'd rather rebuild it than throw a bone yard motor in it anyhow. Now I'll now for sure what's under the hood and it'll be a hell of a lot cheaper.
Tomorrow I'm going to finish up painting the hood and trunk with SEM Hot Rod Black. I got them into primer today.

And for the good/bad news...

So whats the plan and end goal for the engine? Now would be a good time to do some internal upgrades that wont necessarily break the bank.

Coyote rods..... Cheapest piston will run you 400.... Used might be a little less.... Most are 20 over

The rods with bad bearings, are they still in good shape? You could find some npi pistons and put in there to get a little more compression out of it.

The pistons and rods are perfect, so I should be good to go there. If it were just me driving it, I'd be doing some performance mods, but my son will be the one driving it the most. I'd rather not have a rocket ship for him lol The 315/35 tires should keep him from spinning much with a stock motor hopefully.

So thankful I did not have a rocket. My stock V6 was more than enough to get me into trouble in high school lol.

Good to go on the CC plates and lowering springs!

Booo every kid needs a rocket!!!!
Ha. Until you're a parent lol... I was the kid ripping it up everywhere from dirt to the street. I built my first car. I'm lucky to be alive. My son's skill level is very different from mine back then. He's learning, but... He'll be plenty happy with this for now and not a Focus.

My first car on the street was an 80 Grand Prix that I thought was pretty awesome. $200 for a mint old lady owned car with no miles. I pulled the 301 with a spun bearing, dropped in a Pontiac 400 out of a boat 76 Grand prix. That with 600 Holley and an aluminum intake and a real nice custom exhaust I had bent up. It sounded great and looked the part, but in reality it couldn't get out of it's own way lol Keystone wheels and Eagle GT+4 tires. 80s at their best! Sold that and bought an 84 Z28. Loved that car. 1G1AP87GOEN181444. How sad is that, I haven't seen that car since San Diego in 95, but I still remember the VIN.

Yes, I've known real speed too. Here's a couple more toys. Only the black Z28 is left out of these three:

Back to the Stang. I got the hood and trunk painted last night. It came out ok after two full days of body work and an 1 hr of shooting the actual paint with a 1/2 hour flash time lol Even thought it's Hot Rod black, I'm going to color sand it, do a little more body work and shoot it again. The stuff isn't as easy as you'd think. Especially on fiberglass that you had to strip down completely and painting in a garage...
I looked at them this morning, and they're now nice and flat black like they're supposed to be.

Second coat, still wet.

Big difference from this pink nightmare!

Can't wait to see those parts on! And yes, growing up I was the master of all things wheeled. I can see much of the younger generation cares less about that. Sigh, we are part of a possibly dying hobby.

Nice rides! My girly loves Camaros, she would think you have some fine specimens!

I don't think it's so much the younger generation doesn't care, it's that all the snowflakes have made it so there's no places to ride dirt bikes anymore. If my sons tried to ride where I did growing up, they'd have the bikes confiscated now. It's sad...

That's true.

"When I was your age, we had toys that ran on gasoline"

"Daddy, you're not supposed to use that!"

Ya, that's right. Who's da man? So plug #8 was seized up good and tight. I soaked it for a few days in PB Blaster, heated it up and even hit it with the impact gun. Nothing. Not even close to moving. So last night I decided it was time to tackle it. Here are the results. I cut the electrode and knocked out the porcelain. Then one drill bit at a time I worked my way up until it was only paper thin. Not a scratch in the threads! I'm psyched. Man the previous owner should be smacked...

Before removing the spark plug, I threw the newly painted trunk and hood back on to check fit and see what they look like. I think they came out pretty decent, but I'm going to color sand them, fix a couple of small spots and re-shoot them. Tail lights have to go...

I'm curious how it will look after color sanding. Please post pics of that before reshooting.

Unbolt that spoiler and drill some holes about 1"-1.5" back and remount. The front of the spoiler will cover the old holes but it looks much better with that style spoiler.
