Okay, hit a Big Milestone today. Did a bunch of small things, waiting on Zeitronix and switch stand-offs to arrive, and planned out the wiring for the switches. I also installed the low coolant sensor into the new universal overflow tank and mounted that guy up for goods, and did some other small things. But the Big Milestone, the Big Deal was that I connected the battery. For the first time since I moved and replaced the battery, and re-wired everything, the car saw juice. And it didn't explode. Or catch fire and burn the house down. In fact, it worked. The turn signals/hazards worked, the radio worked, the gauges worked and lit up. This is a Big Deal. I didn't start the car as it's not ready for that, and the ECU is still not hooked up. But the car saw power, and it didn't blow a fuse.

So I am really pleased with that, there is a lot that could have gone wrong (and still is a lot) but this is a good sign that I didn't totally eff things up. There will still be a moment of truth when I try to start it, to see if the battery and cables can provide enough oomph. But big progress, so excite :)

Okay, I took some pics with lights on. I couldn't help it. It's been soooooo long since this car has had power.

I decided to use a red dome light (but still kept white map lights). Because everyone knows red leds are faster than white:

And lastly, this is with the red dome light on and the driver side map light (which is white):

Oh, I almost forgot, I also tried to replace the fans last night. Yah, that's not going to work. The replacement fans are a dual-electric setup spread across the entire face of the rad, mounted in a metal shroud.....which totally can't be installed because of the ABS unit. Dammit. I'm not prepared to get rid of ABS right now, so back in went the stock fan, and on the shelf went the replacement fans. This is not a huge setback, really more of a minor inconvenience. But still, good to know. If you run ABS, chances are very good that you won't fit a dual fan setup across the entire face of the rad.

Last night I installed the new rear calipers. As it turns out, I also had the clip installed in the caliper wrong, which maybe means that the pads weren't releasing properly as they couldn't slide like they were supposed to. I'm really hoping this fixes the issue I was having with the rear brakes making a moaning sound and grabbing when going around corners. Fingers super crossed.

Oh, and don't paint your calipers white, as g36 monkey had suggested I shouldn't. Holy dirty caliper. And that's just from the install. Sheesh. Well, once I get the wheel back on, I'll take a couple pics. I think it will look okay, but I am prettttty sure I'm not doing the front calipers in white.

Doing a brake bleed now. Which ended up being more effort than swapping calipers. I use a Motive Power Bleeder, and I guess it's been a while since I had it out (at least a year). The hose was breaking, and for the life of me I just could not get the cap thing installed on the master cylinder. It was ridiculous. Anyway, I got it installed finally, and went through 2 liters of brake fluid so far. Still got bubbles. I ran out of brake fluid. So I'll order a bunch more, fill the power bleeder all the way up, get a book, and spend the evening bleeding. It's a lot more bubbles than I would have expected. I hope I didn't eff something up. All my connections up at the master cylinder are tight. So we'll see.

I started working on the switches for the power door locks and power windows last night. Due to their height, I have to solder on the wires to the terminals and then use spade connectors to hook them into the car's harness - this will make more sense after I post up some pics, which I should get around to tonight. The real excitement will be tomorrow evening after the stand-off things arrive and I can populate them with the switches.

I still have a number of things to do, but the items left before I can start the car are dwindling quickly...

Mmmmkay. The widebands are just about ready to be installed:

IMG_4479.jpg

You may notice 3 connectors on the end there. One is for power & ground to both Zeitronix ZT-3's. Another is for the simulated narrow band output from each: the "left" ZT-3 feeds a simulated narrow band to the EEC's left bank O2 input; the "right" does the same thing for the EEC's right bank O2 input. The car does not have narrow band O2's anymore, though the EEC thinks it still does. The last connector, the black one, is a single linear wideband output from the "left" Zt-3. This will be used when I go MegaSquirt. The simulated narrow bands will be disconnected, and this one connected up. Easy peasy.

I also started wiring up the switches to the car's harnesses. Ford was very, very clever when they designed the power window and power door lock circuits. Very clever. And, also very hard to modify. You need very special switches to make it work, a normal switch won't work with the stock circuits. Changes are required. Which I will get into later, both here and in this other post.

Here's the switches: there wasn't enough room for spade connectors, so I had to solder "pigtails" on them. I also used Weatherpak connectors. Because it's what I had. The little wires with the spade terminals are for the LED switch lighting. More on that laters.

Here's the factory harness, starting to get "modified" to accept my switches:

And hooked up...

And holy crap that window hasn't been up in a looooooooooong time!

Switch stand-off things arrived today, and they look fantastic!

The switches don't quite fit in their spots - on purpose. I had the holes cut a tad small to make sure I didn't accidently end up with a loose switch because the hole was too big. I will use my scroll saw and nibble away some aluminum in key spots and they will fit liiiiiiike a glovvvva!

BIG THANKS to Jakespeeds for doing this job for me - pretty much no one else would because it was such a small job. He and his guys nailed it, they look fantastic and I really appreciate their efforts! Cannot wait to get them painted and installed, they are going to look just absolutely tits.
