Re: 1996 Gt Build Thread

July 6, 2011: Purchase & First Pictures

I purchased this car on May 21, 2011. I bought it when I was 16. It's my very first car.
I bought it used with 103,xxx miles. It had been babied by the previous owner, as he only drove it 2000 miles in 5 years.

A little background on the car:
- It's a 1996 Ford Mustang GT Convertible with the premium package.
- The car is completely bone stock, right down to the paper filter.
- It has a black top as well as black leather seats and interior.
- It's equipped with a 4R70W and stock 3.27 gears.

Here is the very first picture I shot of it, while my dad was talking to the dealer, followed by the first pictures I took of it once I had purchased it:

A 2 inch drop, s281 wing, and removing the hood pins sounds like an awesome plan!

Although personally I would go with a black wing instead of carbon.

October 25, 2011: Polished 03/04 Cobra Rims, Red Calipers, New Tires

This was probably one of the most heartbreaking moments of my cars history. As some of you may know, when i bought the car it came with some chrome split spoke wheels, which are really rare. Unfortunatley, the rims were rusting, the chrome was flaking, and both front rims look like they went through some major curb rash. The rims looked amazing from a distance, and i regret swapping them a little to this day. However, when i picked up my polished 03' replicas from CjPonyParts, i was overcome with joy. The rims give my car the look it deserves, and i get compliments on the car everywhere i go.

I wrapped the back tires in some 275/40/17 sumitumos because i had blown all my money on the rims and didnt have much left for a good tire (wanted 315 NT555r's).
The front ones are wrapped in 235/35/17 sunew tires, which are just about new as well.
The rims are 17x9 all around, and yes thats what i wanted, not 18's like most people.

A friend of mine's dad owns a tire shop/alignment service and i brought the car down one day after school and he mounted my new rims to the new rubber and checked the car for alignment issues, all for free. Did i mention i ate at Sonic for the first time?!
I owe my friend big time, because i saved tons of money, and i'm really happy with the turnout of these wheels.
I also painted the calipers with some duplicolor caliper paint while i was at it, just to bring a little life into my ride.

Pictures of the new wheels, tires, and painted calipers:

Your car is looking really good man and with those mods you have planned it's going to look even better.

Get the carbon fiber S281, you could always paint it if you don't like it. Also, when I ordered mine, it was cheaper than the regular ones

Really? Last time i checked specialcarbonfiber the carbon fiber one went for $170 shipped and the black gel coat for $120.
If it's cheaper i will definitely. get it. What im going to do is contact them to pick it up myself since their location is 15 minutes away from where i live. If i can save the $40 of shipping i will most likely also go for the carbon fiber one.

That could be right. I bought mine a little over a year ago so it's very possible the prices have gone up. The S281 from this vendor seems to get more popular by the day.

I would have paid $500 for mine if I had to I like it so much (Probably would still be saving for it though ha). The fit and finish is perfect and even though it's a smaller mod, it really changes the look of the car

November 7, 2011: Exhaust Setup

New exhaust setup: Flowmaster 2 chamber super 44's & UPR off road x-pipe.

I got the mufflers about a month after i got the car and the new sound was quiet impressive. The tone was very deep, but there was alot of room for improvement.
After months of saving and researching, i picked up a off road x-pipe from UPR. The fit wasnt quite perfect and the shop had to weld part of the stock pipe to the end of my new pipe where the passenger side bolts up the the hanger. Nonetheless, the sound the car made when it turned on was amazing.
I grin from ear to ear everytime i start it up and getting on the gas petal only makes me love it more. I started setting off car alarms within the first week lol.

Theres one picture that shows my tailpipe, which has a loose hanger, and how close it is to my car's frame.
The tailpipe hits sometimes while idling and while taking turns. I will get this fixed soon, because im cutting off the tailpipes and going turn-downs.

I was also in need of a new serpentine belt for the old one was weary and could break any minute.
My sn95forums.com decal also came in! Big thanks to Javi for shipping them so quickly.
I had a can of vht niteshade lying around so i blacked out my side reflectors. I was originally gonna smoke my tails, but decided not too since they matched my calipers.

Here are those pictures:

December 1, 2011: Clear Corners, HID's, LED's, & New Headunit

One of the first things i did to my car was get rid of those hideous oem corner lights. Yaknow, the ones with the giant orange reflectors. I ordered a set of clear corners off ebay for $25. They're not the greatest looking lights, but for now they will do. I'm thinking about getting some black housing depo lights somewhere down the road.

After swapping out the corners, i could still see the reflection of the turn bulbs, so i went and got some chrome ones. Problem solved.
Then i placed an order for a new headunit with aux/SDcard/usb inputs so i could play my ipod while driving. The headunit was really cheap and the sound quality was untouched!

I ordered some red LED lights for my map lights just to be cool. Seriously.
There was also this place downtown that sold HID kits for $25, so i went down there and picked up some 8000K HID fog lights.
Don't forget the infamous fog light mod. I almost always drive with my fog lights now since it looks so sick from the outside.

Pictures of the lights and headunit:

were those LED gauge cluster lights hard to put in?

Nope, it was fairly easy. Here's the guide i used:
http://www.sn95mustangs.com/index.php?page=articles&op=readArticle&id=15&title=Custom-LED-Gauge-Cluster

The only thing is make sure you get bright LEDs because the gauge has a blue paper filter and when i bought my red LEDs, not much light shined through at night.
i'm going to buy new bulbs soon (pure whites) and my gauge lights will be blue, but at least you'll be able to see it.

December 6, 2011: Cold Air Intake

These are my first ever changes/mods to my motor.
I know i was staying away from my engine bay until i was done with my exterior and interior modifications, but i couldnt pass up this offer.

A friend came down who is selling his 03' Gt and brought his cold air intake & performance chip. He was originally selling it for $100 on craigslist, but since he was in town, he brought it down for me and gave them both to me for $50! I installed the cold air intake and the performance chip later that week. The car has a much better throttle response and i couldnt be more pleased with the deal i got.
