Just as I’d suspected. The stretch belt failed and knocked the serpentine belt off. I found remnants of the stretch belt to support this on the opposite side of the engine.

While knocking the serpentine belt off, rubber began to melt to the spinning idler/tensioner pulleys. That ultimately led to the main belt failure.

Began removing the KRC pump setup.

That is, until I need to install the main belt to hold the water pump pulley. Can’t get the bolts out and I’m not going to use a pry bar since I need resale value intact.

Well, look at it this way, you got all the stretch life that belt had. It just decided to shorten the life of the connected pulleys.

Tried a couple different methods of bolt extraction to no avail. 71528374861__DD9730C0-DF25-4026-A7E2-740B543B8873.jpeg71529350651__FD57FE42-DADD-4FE6-BA5A-05DB596E9CFA.jpeg

Decided to try and remove the KRC bracket. Which was successful.

Cleaned everything up a bit and put the AC belt drive in place.

What a day.

Have it running and waiting for my Volvo EPS pump to deliver Tuesday. It was supposed to be here yesterday but FedEx had other ideas.

Volvo EPS power steering 2.0

I’ll fill it in blanks later but here’s some preliminary install pictures. Straight roadkill garage style brackets but it’ll do.

Brand new Volvo pump!

Just need to

1. Shorten the (blue) pressure line and connect to the pump

71564714774__A95728AC-6993-419D-8D46-C068C35DEE50.jpeg

2. connect the low pressure side to the y-fitting

71564713507__FCC67323-84E1-4D7F-8E00-1ED759830071.jpeg

IMG_9937.jpeg

3. wire the pump to the load side of the breaker and daisy chain the line side to the other breaker

IMG_9933.jpeg

4. loom the canbus/12v trigger wiring, connect it to the Holley

IMG_9936.jpeg

5. fill the reservoir and start circulating fluid.

IMG_9934.jpeg

IMG_9934.jpeg

6. Secure the lower bracket to the radiator support

I’m going to do some extensive cleaning after this is finalized too. The previous pump has a leak at a point and the bottom of the engine bay is an oily disaster area right now.

Did i miss something? I remember you stating the last electric steering pump wasnt sufficient enough for racing and you were going to make the switch to a mechanical pump on the engine. I ask because im intrigued with deleting my engine powered steering pump and i like what you have going on.

I know the electric pump will serve me good because my car will never see a circuit race. Most quick side to side steering ill be doing is in a grocery store parking lot.

You’re right. The first time I competed with the Volvo setup I quickly discovered its shortcomings. That’s when I switched to the hydraulic, KRC pump. The KRC setup was great when underway but sucked at less than parking speeds. Really had to rev the engine to get it to turn at times. Which was fine but it was annoying. The other caveat was retaining air conditioning. The KRC mounted where the passenger side idler mounted and I was forced to run a stretch fit belt. Some time later, I discovered a couple of vendors that offered pump speed controllers.

Eventually the KRC started to leak on the stretch fit belt which would cause it to slip and AC output suffered for daily usage. I dealt with it until the recent, catastrophic failure and decided enough was enough.

In review, my reasoning for the change:

1. Crappy low speed manners
2. Engine speed dependent
3. Stretch fit belt issues
4. Catastrophic failure

That was my reasoning to switch back. I haven’t ordered a controller just yet but I won’t be competing again until November due to work. I’m only interested in keeping the car on the road right now.

Figured out the 6AN x 14mm needed to be 6AN x 12mm. Dang nabbit. Amazon will drop the proper fitting off tomorrow. Finished the wiring and modified the feed line to the hydroboost.

IMG_9978.jpeg

As it turned out, I had previously left the control wiring in place and simply plugged the Canbus/12v stuff in.

All that is left is to program the Holley to turn the pump on, connect the return line, install the proper pump, connect the feed line, fill the reservoir and test.

Finalized the return line and mocked up the feed line using an incorrect, but dimensionally accurate, fitting.

IMG_9992.jpeg

IMG_9993.jpeg

Reactivated the output in the Holley software and tested the pump.

IMG_9983.jpeg

IMG_9982.jpeg

IMG_9995.jpeg

The pump activated and is ready for use. Pending the delivery/installation of the correct feed line fitting tomorrow, all I have left is to double check all connections, fill the reservoir and leak test. Test drive will quickly follow.

Edit: As @lwarrior1016 astutely pointed out, I also need to bolt the lower bracket to the core support.

Got it all back together and took a test drive. While backing into the carport, the feed line blew out of the fitting.

Rats. That stuff is $26 per liter. Oh well. Took the hose off to inspect. Figured out that negligence on my part led to the failure. Decided to re-use an already proven hose and put it back together. Drove it around a bit and it’ll work fine for now. Back to daily driver duty tomorrow.

So, is the second gear shift a slip, or am I hearing things? Secondly, why didn't you opt for PPH setup keeping the stock p/s and moving the alt. reversed on top? Just curious, as mine works fine.

ps: glad to see you removed the "fixed" socket on the bracket bolt to the frame. ;)
